Jay walker fined and warned

  • 27 Sep 2011 13:46:44 GMT

    [There are some idiots who use the crossing when the red light is on for pedestrians and yet screem abuse at drivers who do not stop for them inspite of it being green for the drivers.

    ]

    !+... I have to use the fort area daily and these pedestrians have no courtesy whatsoever. And the worst is that even policemen from the fort police HQ tend to do this.

    Who is a jay walker?

    I thought it was a spelling mistake.

    Instead of `GAY WALKER` it was printed `JAY WALKER`!

    Ah! Policemen?

    They have all rights.

    Do they pay the bus fare when they board a bus?

    [Who is a jay walker?]

    A pedestrian who walks all over the roads without using pavements and pedestrian crossings.

    [The police said it is an offence to cross the road within 50 metres from a pedestrian crossing without using it. ]

    This is news to me! Was this law always there, or did it come into effect recently?

    First the walking road users must be educated about the new rules before it is enforced. Electronic and other media must be used to do this. Most of the people know about the yellow zebra crossings. How many people are aware of the signal lights with the flickering man in green and red? This is where the education must start. Come to the crossing, look at the light,if the man is green then cross quickly. If the Man is red then stay till it turns green. The vehicle users must also respect this rule at the signal lights.

    The other importent thing is to barricade both sides of the road upto the pedestrian crossings so that the all will have to come to the correct place to cross. Majority of the gay walking happens because the motorway is open to the pedestrians to cross from any place. Have the barricades like the Borella Junction or Fort Station where pedestrians are directed to crossing points.

    Pay the penelty is not going to create that state of mind.

    Sri Lankans have plenty of money now. They will pay the fine and walk all over the road again.

    Eventhough people in SL are supposed to be 90% literate it`s a need for concern that many people in SL do not have that much of common sense!
