Sri Lanka Ports Authority had suffered a loss amounting to 1,064.51 million rupees last year, a document tabled, by Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, in Parliament said yesterday.

The losses were caused by errors in converting foreign exchange figures of a Japanese loan facility to documents in the Treasury, the response tabled by the deputy minister said.

The SLPA s total revenue for the year 2010 stood at Rs 28,380 million and the total expenditure in the same year at Rs 29,530 million. The loss without settling the taxes stood at Rs 1,240 million while after settling taxes, amounting to 180 million rupees, the loss shot up to Rs 1,064 million, it said.

During the year, a total number of 2,928 ships had arrived at the Colombo Harbour and the container terminal had operated 2,167,173 containers. The document was tabled in response to a question raised by DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake. (SI)

Sri Lanka said Thursday it was counting on its own how many civilians were slain at the end of its bloody civil war to counter claims that tens of thousands were killed and fend off international calls for a war crimes probe.

Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also acknowledged for the first time that soldiers may have committed unspecified 'crimes.' He promised to investigate and punish them.

Both the count of the killed and the admission of misconduct were a major shift for a government that had sworn its soldiers were beyond reproach and insisted for more than two years that not a single civilian was killed by its forces during the final stages of the war.
