Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau has taken steps to set up an office in the capital Colombo to coordinate the employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Italy.
The office is to be located in the premises of the Italian embassy in Jawatta Road, Colombo, the Foreign Employment Bureau says.
Governments of Sri Lanka and Italy have come to an agreement regarding recruitment of Sri Lankans for employment in Italy.
Under the agreement a Local Coordinating Office will be established at the Italian Embassy in Colombo and the Italian government will provide assistance on the linguistic and vocational training of Sri Lankan workers to suit the needs of that country.
The agreement is similar to the agreement with the Government of South Korea under which many thousands of Sri Lankans have sought foreign employment.
Italian Government normally offers 3,500 job quotas a year to Sri Lanka but those offers are taken by the hundreds of Sri Lankans illegally entering Italy.
A large number of Sri Lankans are already employed in Italy but the recruitment methods are costly and selective.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Italian Coordinating Office will regulate the recruitment based on an annual preferential quota for Sri Lankan workers determined by the Italian government depending on their market requirement.

Perfect timing.
Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Italian bonds fell for a fifth week, driving yields to the highest in the euro s history in a slump that was only stemmed after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi agreed to push through austerity measures and then step down.
First Austerity measur is more jobs for Sri Lankan's in Itali. |

| These guys are really irresponsible and they are misleading the public. There is an official unemployment rate of 8.5% in Italy and even the guys living in the north like Milano or Varese (where the situation is better than in the south) are all trying to get a job in southern Switzerland. |

These jobs must be obviously menial jobs. SLFEB may be thinking of stopping the Sri Lankans illegally entering Italy from getting these jobs. The chances are they will fail miserably given the corruption, nepotism and resultant inefficiency that government organisations are famous for. The SLFEB office in Italy will be full of political cronies who can do nothing right. |
