Amaradeva and Nanda Malini like peole are Aththa and Muththas in Sri Lankan music.
Generally, we assume that those old people are always great.
Sri Lanka has many very young singers who do some excellent work. |

Hymn for Sri Lanka was written by Rev. Senior who was a Principal or Trinity or Kingswood in early day. He Loved SL and Lived in Haputale after retirement where you can see most pets of SL from that area.
This hymn was the out come of that Beauty of Mother Lanka.
I am not aware of the tune which is similar to Danno Budunge and which came first.
To me Pandit Amaradeva was not the original singerf Danno Budunge.
Can any one to help with the history? |

I have listened 5-6 times. This is so wonderful.
Normally I don't listen to a song more than once in LNP.
Thanks for posting.

The original was sung as Dharma Budunge by Hubert Rajapaksha (ca. 1920s). This appears to be meaningful than 'Danno' If you listen to the lyrics you'll find some changes to what you hear today(Evolution?)
Here is tyhe link to the song in YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ds_CMOa3J8
The tune is a corruption from a piece by Wagner and first by Rev. Senior during World War I as a Prayer to Ceylon. This is what I was told by the late Devar Suriyasena who in fact provided me with his Musical Score. Whatever it is both versions are very beautiful and soothing and makes no difference who composed it first. But give the devil his due! |
