One thing I agree with Roshan is that if not for the 2- term restriction, MR most probably wouldn't have had the chance to become the presidential candidate in 2005.

On the other hand selecting the candidate from a party could happen democratically or otherwise like how Ranil remains the leader of UNP with all his blatant defeats! This is why most of the kings in the past were dethroned by assassination!

As far as the leader caters to the majority aspirations they will be protected and re-elected by the masses, no matter all the NGO goons, Hypocritical IC or terrorist goons with unfair claims do to stop it! Sri Lankan proved it last time and will continue to do that in future!

Still Premadasa could not manage Lalith and Gamini with all the powers he had.

Preme, Lalith & Gamini was groomed by JR.
As a prez Premadasa succeeded against impeachment motion brought.
then Lalith & Gamini had to quit UNP since Prez. Premadasa is too powerful for them to handle.

MR was there in the radar and majority of the SLFP members voted for him! How do you think he was selected as the PM! During the same time JVP brought an alternative for the PM post naming LK, but MR had opposed the move strongly! From the MR's point of view Natural & justified!

CBK wouldn't have come if she contested for the 3rd time cos she was so unpopular! The best thing she did in her political life was to GO!

BTW, though You tried to change the topic from MR to CBK abt the 'stupidest' talk, is a vain effort! Go back to your own posts and do a re-check!

With this amendment you see RW Vs MR presidential race for the foreseeable future?

Ranil is a dead horse. With MR as a president around Ranil is only as good as to drive his car.

If this amendment becomes a law, the president can run for the presidency any number of times despite his unpopularity. This is in fact a good chance for opposition and alternative insurgencies.

good point.
it would be good if the constitution also say after loosing two presidential elections the opposition leader should not contest 3rd term.
