SLT in bid to attract fixed wire-line subscribers

Rather than rise like most telecommunication sectors, the number of fixed wire-line connections fell from 933,536 in 2008 to 871,248 in 2009. The SLT has lost 62,188 subscribers within the year and the company has failed to attract new customers due to weakness in an earlier marketing plan and its implementation, they added.

SLT trade unions have brought all these aspects to the notice of the new board of directors and action has been taken to rectify it through the implementation of the new strategic marketing plan making use of SLT s fully integrated/diversified telecom services of fixed wire-line and wireless and mobile telephony, ADSL and mobile broadband access and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).

The final months of the war saw unprecedented human tragedy. While many officers and soldiers of the overwhelmingly Sinhalese military showed sincere concern for ordinary Tamils, as indeed numerous individual Sinhalese have done in the past, the fact remains that Tamil civilians were punished in the name of fighting the Tigers. Unceasing artillery, MBRL (Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher) and air attacks took a massive toll, killing and maiming those who neither wanted the war nor took part in it. The 'us-and-them' ideology based on narrow ethnic nationalism failed to adequately recognize that the state could not be a carbon copy of the LTTE, which of course had contempt for civilian lives, Tamil, Muslim or Sinhalese.

Roshan,

DayanJ has this tendency to shoot his mouth off and get into trouble. He had a good job at the UN and actually did well there until he shot his mouth off on a minor issue and had to come back home. I know him personally nad he's been this way from his childhood. Remember him joining EPRLF etc.?

ah Roshan, you seems to be missing me a lot when I am not around, quoting my name where ever possible :)

what I said the other day was, you were comparing apples with oranges, and not apples with apples!

how many of us actually use fixed lines to call someone when our contacts all have mobiles? the future will be for mobile phones rather than fixed lines...

I am thinking of actually disconnecting our home line as it is hardly used.
Cell phones are cheaper and more convenient.

SLT will have to come up with a different product service to stay competitive in the next few years. As all telecom services are available through the wireless networks now.

Poppy,

the reason why you don't use fixed lines is SLT is doing a lousy job in marketing, while dialog, mobitel, suntel do good marketing stealng away the fix line subscribers. SLT call rates same as decades ago...

fixed line still have a lot to offer to Sri Lanka. broadband penetration is so low and existing copper lines is the best cheapest way to expand broadband penetration. fixed line even can be used for IPTV. In singapore Singtel doing TV broadcasting via fixed line. fixed line will evolve towards EPON, GPON.

Panna,

You know where I live and when I applied for a ADSL line from SLT, they told me that there is a problem with a cable coming from the transmitting station to our village DB and that was 5 years ago. Upto now they have not done anything about the cable and we have something like 2500 subscribers off that DB. That's SLT for you.
