A senior police officer who tried to get a ransom of Rs. 7.5 million from a saw mill owner by using the name of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa has been arrested.
The Superintendent of Police had reportedly asked for this ransom on the promise to give in return empty artillery shells to this Moratuwa businessman. Sources close to Minister Rajapaksa told the Daily Mirror yesterday that the two had approached the manager of a state bank in Moratuwa to work out the transaction.
