PM says 723 LTTE cadres arrested from welfare camps in July
Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne yesterday told Parliament that in July security authorities had arrested 723 LTTE cadres from welfare camps.
Moving a motion, seeking the extension of the state of emergency by one month, PM Jayaratne said that altogether 765 persons had been arrested under emergency regulations and out of them, 74 were detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Emphasising on the need to continue with emergency regulations, Jayaratne said emergency regulations were needed to ensure the LTTE would not make a fresh attempt to destabilize the country.
Although the LTTE had been crushed militarily, Jayaratne said that there were some elements still trying to revive the separatist cause. He said: 'We need emergency regulations to curb such attempts. The international community has realized its folly in allowing the LTTE to operate abroad. But they are now taking action against them.'
