2 lakhs of Sri Lankan families are homeless. 11000 families who were devastated by Tsunami have still not been provided shelters. Following the war in the North, in the East alone there are grieving 41,000 widows, while in the North there are 40,000 of them. In Jaffna, the number of widows are 20,000.

Hambantota District UNP M P Sajith Premadasa revealed these startling miserable facts about the abysmal sufferings and hardships faced by the people of SL. According to Premadasa, the number of individuals who are without homes are around 60 lakhs .

Sajith Premadasa gave out these shocking details at the UNP media unit at a media briefing today (23). He added that the Govt. s empty brags about SL being made a model for Asia are belied by these facts and statistics revealed by none other than the Govt. itself.
Sajith Premadasa speaking on the shelter for the people program inaugurated by the Late Premadasa, the Minister of housing at that time, had by his one lakh houses project, ten lakhs houses project and 15 lakhs houses project aimed at providing a house for every family by the year 2000. He announced this ambition of his via the UN. This Govt. on the other hand had not been able to even think of a solution for the country s housing problem, let alone build houses, he pointed out.

The Govt. has no method or means to build houses for those who lost their homes during the war. India has come forward to build 50,000 houses for them and has internationally confirmed it. Although this effort of India should be appreciated, as Sri Lankans we must be ashamed that we cannot help our own people. Another country has to come to the rescue of this country to assist in the housing program because the Govt. is clueless and aimless in this regard. Even India is channeling this fund for this purpose through the Red Cross and the NGOs, and not granting to the Govt., he noted.

Referring to UNP re structuring program, he said, the UNP has laid the foundation stone to take positive steps on its journey, while adding that he hoped all the discussions and proposals will be taken into account, and members of the PCs, UCs, provincial MPs, Parliamentary Members and Organizers will be shareholders as suggested by him at the Executive Committee meetings in the future when deciding on the measures to be taken. The sheet anchor of every party are MPs who have risen from village level, he pinpointed. No matter what problems crop up within the party, the MPs who are loyal to the party and stick with it should be given due recognition . It is his conviction that such recognition will be upheld, he added.

Sajith P, please do not shed crocadile tears!
Even if your UNP was in power these 'calamities' would have happened in Sri Lanka.
Tsunami was a natural disaster as any idiot knows.
If your own party did not partition the country & supported the barbaric, butcher tiger terrorists, there would have been less widows in the country.
Everybody knows that the Rajapaksa administration is doing all it could do to make a brighter Sri Lanka for the citizens.
The UNP/JVP/SF and all the opposition parties make the forward march difficult for MR!
Is it your job to give out these figures?
Where is your 'beloved' UNP leader to speak out?
Are you making your way to the Presidential throne?
Sajith, you are not Ranasingha P... You are his son only.
You can not be in your father's shoes or wear his hat to make Sri Lanka a prosperous country.
Help and get the help of you UNP 'leaders'' to make your dream come true!
Then only can you be a 'real Premadasa'!

Question is these numbers are factual. By all accounts of daily reports Sri Lanka is been developed at a speed no other country has been able to even dream about in the past.If that the case every one will see in a very short period of time this module that so unique to Sri Lanka will be copied and implement by the rest of the world. Not to emulate Sri Lanka will be very foolish.

Why is that only in opposition people are humane, rational and compassionate? While in opposition even Mahinda Rajapakse championed the cause of human rights of Southern youths and went all the way to UN Geneva Human Rights quarters to plead for intervention in Sri Lanka to stop the abuses and save the youths? Why has he changed into a president who support and guarantee the impunity of human rights abusers and monsters?

Even JHU and JVP turned compassionate after seeing the appalling conditions of IDPs in Wanni and Jaffna. But the those in power are blind to their needs and grievances. They are using these unfortunate people to get loans and aid under the pretext of developments and rehabilitation.
