Backtracking from his stand that the powerful Executive Presidency should be replaced by a parliamentary system headed by an Executive Prime Minister, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Monday that he never sought the abolition of the Exeutive Presidency.
Apart from wanting to sit in parliament (presently, he can address parliament only occassionally), the President said that the constitutional change must include the right to switch parties. He recalled that his own party, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), was formed because its founder, SWRD.Bandaranaike, left the United National Party (UNP).
The opposition UNP, led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been asking for the abolition of the Executive Presidency. According to media reports, Rajapaksa had agreed to discuss this on the grounds that the SLFP had itself told the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) on constitutional reform in 2007, that it preferred a Westminister style parliamentary system.
However, subsequent statements by the SLFP and UNP showed that the two were divided on what powers the Prime Minister should enjoy. The SLFP wanted a wholesale transfer of the President s powers to the Prime Minister, while the UNP wanted a substantial dilution. |

She also said in politics the slightest mistake is a crime and that dealing with the media is a big challenge. She added that after the 360 interview with Derana in June she was very upset and shut herself off for about 3 days.
I am hoping to face 360 again in the right time, she assured.

Budget carrier SpiceJet Ltd, which is all set to fly international routes this year, has ordered 30 Boeing aircraft worth $2.7 billion for delivery from 2014.
The Gurgaon-based carrier will also add 15 aircraft in the next two years of which seven aircraft will be added in this fiscal, director Ajay Singh told reporters on Tuesday.
As the aviation sector grows low-cost airlines are expected to do very well. We expect SpiceJet to take a disproportionate share of the growth, Singh said.
The fresh orders were for Boeing 737-800 aircraft. SpiceJet currently has a fleet of 21 Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 aircraft and has about 13% share in the domestic market. The new aircraft could be owned or taken on lease, Singh said. All its existing aircraft are on lease.
SpiceJet is expected to start international operations by September 2010 and has already received permission to fly to Dhaka, Kathmandu and Male.
Last month, Sun TV founder Kalanithi Maran and his unlisted firm Kal Airways agreed to buy 37.7% in Spicejet and also made an open offer for a further 20%.
