The funeral of Susantha Bandara was held yesterday at the Harilagama Public Cemetery in Buttala amidst a large number of students from the Ruhunu University.
A large number of policemen were deployed in the area and the security had been tightened throughout the funeral.
Meanwhile, the police said it was looking to arrest a student named Bassa who was a colleague of the victim and allegedly to be behind the assault, the police said.
The CID teams are looking for him as he was not found at his Welimada residence.
The police said it would be able to the arrest the suspect within the next few days.
With his arrest a number of unresolved questions would be solved , police media spokesman Preshnatha Jayakody said.
He further said that the post mortem report was also taken into consideration and the police were waiting for the magisterial report.
We are collecting evidence for the death, he said.
However, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuiysa said on Friday that in the post mortem report on the Ruhunu University third-year student it had been mentioned that there was no traumatic cause and the body surface or interior did not reveal recent injuries to corroborate the allegation of assault.
IGP Balasuriya earlier stated that no clash took place between the students and the police on June 18.
The victim Susantha Aruna Bandara (25) was hospitalized on July 8 for vomiting and fever. The hospital after his death has mentioned that the probable diagnosis is Encephalitis.
Two CID teams were deployed immediately in Badulla and Matara to probe the death as the police is been blamed by several university student factions for the death of the student.
Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered a full report with regard to the death of the student. According to the president`s media unit, the Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission, officials at the University of Ruhuna and the IGP have been ordered to bring together a report on his death.
However the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) charges the police for the death of the Arts Faculty student.
These student unions have political ambitions and with the blessings from several political groups will try to motivate university students and damage the entire university system in the next few days, the IGP warned.

Sad story. Police brutality is nothing new in SL. We too got beaten up once by chains by thugs amoung the police. It used to he the JSS goons who come an beat up students those days.
UNP was the worst when it comes to beating and killing students. UPFA comes close second. Edited By - Dewey - 26 Jul 2010 16:42:43 GMT |

If the Security forces could catch 'kotiya' its a simple matter to catch 'bassa'!
Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered a full report with regard to the death of the student
Politicians, whatever their positions, should not meddle in Police investigations!

| Cryinglankans - you sound like a wonderful example of the 'foolish educational system' of Sri Lanka. Machang, don't blame others for your own failures. |

This Balasuriya is sleeping on the job, guy is even worse than our Rajaguru who fainted while inspecting a guard of honor and blamed his pair of new shoes..
If you really want to catch Bassa, you hv. to get a pair of night vision goggles and hit the road at night. If you don't catch Bassa, you can always book a gonwassa roaming the streets at night and hv a free oil change with points for the arrest.
