In the latest personification of the future head of state of Sri Lanka in its ongoing constitutional reform saga, the country has now decided to do away with the Executive Presidency altogether and to introduce a hybrid Executive Prime Minister.
Sources close to the government said that the government has already began exploring the Israeli style Executive Prime Minister (PM), to this end. Also, once elected, there will be no limits on the number of terms for an incumbent to continue as the Executive Prime Minister.
More importantly, the government has also decided to elect the Executive PM based on direct votes of the general public instead of only Parliament MP votes, sources close to the government disclosed. The government initially tried to bring in the proposed executive PM to be elected based only on Parliament MP votes.
But as challenges mounted from the ethnic minority party MPs who requested that the Executive PM should be elected by the people similar to the Executive President, the government has now decided on an Executive PM by popular vote.
Under the Westminster tradition, Sri Lanka previously too had an Executive PM until the 1978 Constitution which introduced the Executive Presidency, thereby changing the Prime Minister to an honorary and a ceremonial designation as it is today.
Also, despite being the Executive PM in the pre-1987 constitution, the PM was not directly elected by the general public, but based only on votes of Parliament MPs. The new hybrid Executive PM will be combination of both an executive PM directly elected by popular votes.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, the high ranking ruling party (SLFP) member, speaking to the weekend press revealed that there will be no limits on thenumber of terms an incumbent can continue in the new Executive Prime Minister , once appointed. He added that all the rights a Parliament MP is entitled to by virtue of a Parliament MP will be conferred equally to the newly proposed Executive Prime

There is no need to change the Constitution. The Constitution is good enough except for one or two features. The proportional system of elections should be changed. The immunity enjoyed by the President should be removed. The impeachment process should be simpler and the Commissions under the 17th Amendment should be given more power and be independent of the President and the Politicians. The Constitution Council should determine the remuneration and the perks of politicians.

| This is another story. The system introduced by JR will never change in SL. This is because all politicians are so greedy and want to be in power with maximum benefits. |

| When we do re-design do not leave room for Tamils to become deputy PM or Vice president of this country. |

Yes! he made sure that even if someone finds the key, that someone who is going to be there to find the key is not one with honourable intentions. |

Sri Lankan ambassador, Donald Perera:
We back Israel's war on terror
He wants Israel to attack Palestinians with full military force if the latter is not interested in a compromise.
After noting the similarities between the Tamil Tigers and Hamas, Perera says Sri Lanka is a staunch supporter of Israel's fight against Palestinian terror
'In case the other side shows it is not interested in a compromise, (Israel) must move on to the military phase with full force. (The government) will have to explain to the citizens that (Israel) is headed for a long and difficult struggle that will exact a heavy price, but at the end of this struggle the country's situation will be much better,' says the ambassador.
'Once you have the public's support, you should fight relentlessly until all of the terror hubs are destroyed. There is no going back.'
Addressing the deadly May 31 commando raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish ship, Perera says, 'As a military man I can understand that Israel had to protect itself. Due to Sri Lanka's vast experience in fighting terror, I can say that it will always support countries that also oppose (terror).'
