Sri Lanka at risk of sea rise

Sea levels are rising unevenly in the Indian Ocean, placing millions at risk along low-lying coastlines in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, scientists say in a study.
Researchers from the University of Colorado and the National Center for Atmospheric Research say the rising sea levels are caused in part by climate change and are triggered by warming seas and changes to atmospheric circulation patterns.
In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize last year, U.S. President Barack Obama warned that if the world does nothing to confront climate change, `we will face more drought, famine and mass displacement that will fuel more conflict for decades`.
The authors of the latest study say higher seas could exacerbate monsoon flooding, placing crops, homes and livelihoods at greater risk. They argue a better understanding of the changes are needed to improve risk assessment planning for the future.
Sea levels in general are rising globally by about 3 mm (0.1181 inch) a year. Scientists blame rising temperatures caused by the growing amounts of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, that trap heat in the atmosphere.
Oceans are absorbing a large part of this extra heat, causing them to expand and sea levels to rise. Warmer temperatures are also causing glaciers and parts of the ice blanketing Greenland and West Antarctica to melt.
The team of researchers in their study used long-term tide gauge data, satellite observations and computer climate models to build a picture of sea level rises in the Indian Ocean since the 1960s.
They found that sea-level rise is particularly high along the coastlines of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka, Sumatra and Java and that these areas could suffer rises greater than the global average.
But they also found that sea levels are falling in other areas. The study indicated that the Seychelles Islands and Zanzibar off Tanzania`s coast show the largest sea-level drop

There has been some prist who have said about 2012 in sri lanka will be affected by the sea and fire now i do not know that in this country that majority od the buddhist are so called buddist but my story is that people are named as buddhist by birth sorry fopr this type of feelings as they do not practice the code of buddhisam
there are many ways to practice is that the people atleast make time available to do yoga as meditation that is like panayama exersise that will at least arrive at the foot hills of buddhisam. then the mind will developed and start to see the future by meditating will people do this i am not sure that people are running behind money to servive and to comfort them in day to days life. i think that people should recomend the bavana would not get people hungrey so why people are running behind to feed them selves my intention was not to preach but is that you see your future and see who you are. then coming back to the subject i know that it is difficult to come to that stage but people whave seen the future of sri lanka is that it will get another tsunami and eat up our land in the costal area i my self have started this for people to learn meditation center to build some rooms for people to come over and learn to meditate and to meet people who have developed their minds and who have thair third eye opend to see it thay could evan see the previous life ehat they were doing what they coud do so thgis message to people who are interestd to see it as i am transforming my estate to an ashram at the haputale region a village called lemastota closer to kosdlanda my e mail is alipakde@yahoo.fr

Sri Lanka at risk of sea rise
Sri Lanka will have to redraw the map of the Island!
This is not good news in case there is another Tsunami.
More stringent mesures have to be introduced to reduce green house gases.
To start this, the government should ban the import of gas guzzling high CC vehicles, just for the sake of a handful of rich men & women.
Hybrid vehicles should replace these monsters of roads... |

Allah, Jehovah, Krishna or Siva have no mercy on the downtrodden.
Again and again the same people who live in coastal areas are battered. There are man made and nature caused disasters.
Tsunami hit them in Dec 2004. LTTE and other paramilitaries forcibly enlisted boys and girls to be trained as cadres to fight among themselves and the Sinhalese security forces. The latter entrapped Tamils within a narrow strip in Mullivaykal and starved them for months. LTTE denied them freedom of movement and the govt food and medicine. The civilians were used as tug-o-war by both the LTTE and the govt. At the end the SL Air Force bombed and the army shelled, between 30,000 and 40,000 perished.
The civilians who managed to survive the onslaught were detained behind barbed wires for more than an year and now the nature is threatening their places of residence with the rise in water level. |

| What good news! Instead of giving two fifth of the coastal area to Tamils, it is thousand times better North and East going under water. Million times better if it is going under water with Tamils. |

Hybrid vehicles should replace these monsters of roads
Cheap running environment friendly etc etc BUT how about the cost of replacement of the electric motor battery in about 3-4 years after using????????? Costs more than the cost of an engine overhaul!!
So ultimately the hybrid car requires an engine overhaul PLUS the replacement of the electric motor battery, double jeorpardy, not worth in the long run.

Kiwi,
You are right on! During the first five years of operation with 20-25,000 km per year, a hybrid car still costs about $ 5000.00 more than a car with a conventional internal-combustion engine. That is when the cost of Gasolene is about a dollar a litre.
General Motors is coming out with GM VOLT, an all-electric car with a limited range, but still with a back up engine to extend the range. The purchase price seems to be almost double that of a conventional Auto of the same size.
It seems the cost-effectiveness of a hybrid auto is still a little far away. |

Try your best to get the Tamils out of your head at least when reading issues pertinent to environmental disasters! See level rise and erosion of cost lines do not discriminate as to who lives where just try to be a good man once! |

Sri Lanka at risk of sea rise
Those living interior, particularly up-country, need not worry as the sea is unlikely to rise more than a few dozen metres at most. |
