http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/ban-use-of-lung-cancer-causing--asbestos-in-sri-lanka.html

MESOTHELIOMA ASBESTOS CANCER is ONE of the DEADLIEST FORMS of CANCER today, with a Mortality Rate so High that EIGHT out of TEN of Those Diagnosed PASS AWAY Within a YEAR of Their Diagnosis. Because of this distressing statistic and the close link between asbestosis and mesothelioma, Anyone with the former disease must be monitored closely at all times so that mesothelioma lung and abdominal cancer can be caught as early as possible.

Lamentably, the authorities in the SARC region have turned a blind eye to this silent killer sitting on our roof tops, as they have been misled to believe that ONLY blue and brown varieties of asbestos cause cancer and not the WHITE asbestos that is more widely used in Sri Lanka and the SARC region. This is a false premise.

ACCORDING TO THE NEW SCIENTIST REPORT FROM AUSTRALIA WHITE ASBESTOS IS AS BAD AS BLUE AND BROWN ASBESTOS.

The Australian study - regarded as the most extensive of its kind yet - makes the link difficult to refute. White asbestos alone was found in the lungs of 14 of 221 cases studied. All three common types of asbestos, white (chrysotile), blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite), were in the lungs of about 70 per cent of the cases (146 of the 221).

The risk of developing mesothelioma from white asbestos was about seven times that from brown asbestos, but about half that of blue, the researchers concluded. The risk of developing mesothelioma from white asbestos increases by 15.7 times for every tenfold increase in the concentration of fibres in the lung. For blue asbestos, the risk increases by 29.4, and for brown by 2.3. Much larger doses of white asbestos would be needed to cause the disease because chrysotile is more readily expelled from the lungs than the other forms of asbestos
