Minister Wimal Weerawansa has ended his fast unto death after President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited him outside the UN office a short while ago. President Rajapaksa had offered Weerawansa water which the Minister accepted and he was later driven away in an ambulance to the army hospital.

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the family of Minister Weerawansa also visited the site of the protest just minutes before the arrival of the President. Weerawansa commenced the fast unto death three days ago to protest the appointment of a panel on Sri Lanka by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon.

Weerawansa had earlier said he will not give up the fast until the UN Chief gives an assurence that the panel will be dissolved.

What a farce! It ended like as we all expected. Nicely written script and good drama that ended as tragicommedy.
Only thing that did not happen was that we hoped MR would spoon feed Wihulu-wansa some 'thambili wathura' not just a glass of water.
This has become a big joke among people and finally he was taken to Army hospital. Only tangible thing happened was that we lost the chance to host UNDP regional center.

Why did he end the fast? Because Maharaja offered him water?

Why did the Defence Secretary remove the police protection provided to the UN compound?

.

This is the story and watch the You tube and listen the audio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg6_ui76g8I&feature=player_embedded

It has been revealed that the protest which was held in front of UN office complex Colombo was conducted with an overall awareness of the government. This came to the notice after a journalist recorded a threat made to a police officer by the Defense Secretary over the phone.

the Defense Secretary reprimanded the police officers for intervening with the protest. Once the police officer replied as the orders were given by the Inspector General, Defence Secretary threatened to dismiss the IGP immediately.
That telephone conversation is as follows.

When Minister Wimal Weeravansa gave a telephone call to defence secretary police officer was engaged with another telephone call. Then the Police Officer ceased his call as follows.

'Sir, Minister Wimal Weerawansa is telling me that I have a telephone call from the Defence Secretary.'
Next Minister Wimal Weerawansa gave his mobile phone to the police officer.
Police officer-Sir
Defence Secretary-I ordered IGP not to send police to that area.
Police Officer-Sir, IGP told us to come. We came because of that.
Defence Secretary- Withdraw all policemen from that place straightaway without leaving a single officer. Withdraw all policemen.
Police Officer-Right sir, Right
Defence Secretary-It is an unwanted thing. Why did you attack those people?
Police Officer- Right sir, Right
Defence Secretary-Why di you attack those people? I'll dismiss the IGP today itself.
Police Officer - Right sir.
Defence Secretary-Get out from there with all policemen
Police Officer - good sir.
Defence Secretary-Don't leave a single police man in that area.
After that Protesters assaulted that police officer

Death farce: Harsha Saturday, 10 July 2010 00:57
By Lakna Paranamanna

Minister Wimal Weerawansa s death-fast outside the United Nation s Office in Colombo is a government strategy to divert attention from the flaws of the 2010 Budget, UNP parliamentarian and economist Harsha de Silva said yesterday.

He said this kind of action might up whip up nationalist emotions, and cause an adverse impact on Sri Lanka s fragile economy.

Mr. de Silva told a news conference that the economic crisis in the country had during the past six years increased the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) by 97 per cent.

To solve the economic crisis, the budget deficit should be brought down to at least five per cent and an economic growth of eight to nine per cent maintained. To achieve this goal the Gross National Product (GNP), which is now at 25 per cent should at least show a 40% increase in investments, he said.

Mr. de Silva said the government had two options to choose from one was to encourage foreign and local private sector investments and the second was investment through borrowings.

But he said the government could not resort to borrowing more funds because this year s debt stands at 108 times the total tax revenue.

Therefore, the ideal option is to encourage foreign and local private sector investments. But the country will lose out on such golden opportunities due to the rash action like that of Minister Weerawansa, Mr. de Silva added.

He said Sri Lanka lacked a focused economic plan and now there was a conflict between the Mahinda Chinthanaya and the Basil Chinthanaya and added that the IMF document titled IMF request for a stand-by arrangement, clearly showed its involvement in Sri Lanka s 2010 budget even though the government dismisses such questions.

The table on Action and Conditionality on page 18 of the document, states that Budget 2010 of Sri Lanka should be consistent with the programme target of the IMF. Among other conditions stated in the table is the raising of the Nation Building Tax by 200 per cent, and a reduction in losses at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) by next year, Mr. de Silva said.

He also criticized the re-nationalization of companies such as SriLankan airlines.

The loss incurred by SriLankan during the past year alone is Rs.12.2 billion. After the re-nationalization of such companies, how is the government planning to cover the losses or continue future maintenance activities? he asked.

The Drama ends as expected.

Act 1: Wimal Weeluwansa terrorizes UN building and staff
Act 2: Wimal Weeluwansa allegedly starts fast unto death
Act 3: MR visits and persuades him to stop even though Wimal Weeluwansa said earlier that even MR cannot stop his fast

Finally as everybody predicted and expected, Wimal Weeluwansa stops his fast even though UN chief Ban ki Moon did not change his stance.

Silly Lanka is a comedy country.

All is about money and extravagent life styles, other wise unemployed people.

The house in Hokandara under construction
Now, a little over a year and a half after forming the NFF, Weerawansa s wife, R.R.M.S. Udayanthi Ranasinghe also known as Shirsha Udayanthi and Shashi Weerawansa, is currently building a three-storey house in Mangala Mawatha, Off Ramanayake Mawatha in Hokandara South.

The Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha has approved Shashi s house plan, which is 4,865 square feet in floor extent. After making the necessary payments for inspection on June 2, 2009, the plan was approved by the Pradeshiya Sabha on July 22, 2009. However, the real floor extent of the house, as reported in the media, is 6,770 square feet.

Rough estimates by building contractors have revealed that the construction of the house would cost close to Rs. 30 million, inclusive of all finishing touches. The contractors have pointed out that the usual cost for a square foot in a house similar to the one being built by Shashi Weerawansa would be approximately Rs. 6,000.

Therefore, if the real floor extent of the house is 6,770 square feet, the cost of construction of the house would be close to Rs. 40 million.

The amount spent on construction would be in addition to the money spent on purchasing the land. The approximate extent of the land is believed to be 30 perches and given the rough estimate of Rs. 250,000 for a perch in Mangala Mawatha, Hokandara South, the cost of the land would be approximately Rs. 7.5 million.

According to the house plan, the ground floor consists of three verandahs, hall, dining area, pantry, kitchen, store room, laundry, two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, servant s toilet and garage area for two vehicles.

The first floor consists of three bedrooms with attached toilets, each bedroom has a large balcony, hall, dining area and pantry.

The second floor has a bedroom with an attached toilet, a large balcony and two big concrete slabs on two levels.

However, the question now is how the Weerawansas earned such a large amount of money. The funds to purchase the land and build the house could surely not have been through collecting Wimal s salary as a parliamentarian since his defection from the JVP.

Shashi Weerawansa s extravagant life style first came to light during Wimal Weerawansa s days in the JVP. While Wimal, the former Marxist, was supposedly engaged in voluntary service to the public by not even accepting the parliamentarians salaries and other perks, Shashi was engaged in business ventures.

If Genral public, steal, cheat, fraud they go to jail.

When politicians do that they get more publicity and promotions.

People don't see the ugly nature of that and the naked of our country as a people.

The Saline drip was started even before Maharaja arrived to offer Water. Box of Lemmon puff was at his reach too .

Even they have violated the protocol for fasting Unto Death , not to mention about human rights. That is probably why Maha Raja stepped in and called it a day?

What a shame we were deprived of celebrating a death of a Moron .

UN sub-committee on Fasting, feasting and photo-calls
Weerawansa must have thought how silly all this is when I have an important position with all the perks such as luxury vehicles, security guards and a thumping salary. What s the use of my dying if someone else would step into my shoes and enjoy all this.

( July10, London, Sri Lanka Guardian)It is a well known fact that our government which is steeped in culture and ancient civilization of over 2500 years promotes theatres, theatricals, dramas and drama queens.

The latest production in the Lankan stage after the IIFA folded with not so much as a curtain call. The drama queen while being given intravenous liquids (a definite no no for a fast unto death campaign. Google Terms and Conditions for Fast Unto Death) then declares he would give up the fast if President asks him to.

There is a certain Code of Conduct for Fast Unto Death. The UN is very strict about this and there are 51 chapters and 21 Articles per chapter so before you fast you need to familiarize yourself with these. Otherwise even in case you actually snuff it your death becomes null and void because you would not have abided by the rules of sub-committee set up on Fast Unto Death under the 1951Geneva Convention.

I bet you did not know this. There are a lot of things you do not know such as Sri Lanka is a democracy but then that does not mean they do not exist. How many of you actually saw a barking deer in Bandarawela but that is not to say it does not exist. Now not only would you have wasted your life (which you have been doing anyway) fasting to death but you would not have even got a mention in the local rag.

This reminds me of another drama I see in Wembley. Outside Alperton Station four East European men have set up a box on which lie three round discs. You need to guess the one with a symbol and you place a wager with a 20.00 note. People are watching and one of them produces this 20.00 note and of course he wins and is rewarded with another 20.00 note. The spectator who placed the wager is one of the gang.

It is a well-known street drama not unlike the one recently played by VW. But this time VW has gained popularity among major news agencies. The joker in the pack and the President (one and the same) gave him Thambili or water (it depends on which news you are reading) and the fast is over before you finish shouting, Throw out the barking Moon and his three satellites . He would never ever have dreamed that he would be the flavour of the day in the international media. As Andy Warhol said everyone will be famous for three minutes.

I wonder when my three minutes will be. I am thinking of going on a fast against the Meteorological Department for bringing in this heat wave which in turn brings out my skin in blotches.

Now has anyone got to find out if the woman who was screaming that 'more people would starve to death if ape Weerawansa Mahathaya maruvoth was sent from the Presidential Secretariat? She certainly did not look like someone who would sacrifice her life for she turned out impeccably dressed and looked well-fed not unlike VW.

VW must have thought how silly all this is when I have an important position with all the perks such as luxury vehicles, security guards and a thumping salary. What s the use of my dying if someone else would step into my shoes and enjoy all this. No I am going to live since I deserve this after not fighting for JVP s ideals but crossing over to the government when the going was opportune.

Hey, Menike, get my Sunday Best for the photo calls. I am not just a pretty face you know. I know that I should end this on Saturday morning well in time for the Sunday editions.
