Sri Lankan president rejects death fasting minister`s resignation

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapksa here Friday rejected the resignation of his minister who is on a death fast opposite the UN compound in Colombo, a spokesman of the minister said.
Wimal Weerawansa, the minister of Engineering Services resigned his ministerial job on Friday as he lay on a mat inside a temporary enclosure.
`I am aware that accusations can be leveled that I have chosen the wrong course of action. If the cabinet post I held is an impediment to carry out my struggle, I would rather leave the cabinet than to abandon my struggle,` Weerawansa wrote to Rajapaksa in his resignation letter.
`The president, however, has rejected his resignation,` Jayantha Samaraweera, a spokesman for Weerawansa said.
Activists from Weerawansa`s party, the National Freedom Front ( NFF) on Tuesday began protest action against UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon`s decision to appoint an advisory panel on alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.
They blocked the entry to the UN compound and camped up there staging protest action.
The protest drew a sharp retort from the UN, which ordered the closing down of the UN development programme regional office in Colombo whilst summoning UN Resident Coordinator Neil Buhne for consultations.

Why accept the resignation when he is doing the same thing that he was doing before the fast.
He used to eat in pubic and sleep in private, now he eats in private and sleeps in public. |

We are deeply dismayed by the blockade of the UN-compound this week in Colombo and the role played in it by a Government minister.
Peaceful protest is part of any democracy, but blocking access to the United Nations - of which Sri Lanka itself is a member - as well as intimidating and harassing UN personnel is a breach of international norms and harmful to Sri Lanka's reputation in the world.
We call upon the government of Sri Lanka to take all appropriate steps to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and premises.
We welcome the meeting scheduled on Monday between the Dean of the diplomatic corps and the Foreign Minister to discuss this issue

Tamils diaspora was also misguided during the height of the war.
Tamil diaspora was also misdirected and misguided during the height of the war in Wanni. LTTE was under the misconception that showing solidarity to Tiger flags, obstruction to the traffic and public in the western capitals and fasting undo death will persuade UN Secretary General to put pressure on Sri Lanka to stop the war and let the civilians and LTTE out of the trapped box.
No one took any action then and LTTE was decimated and Tamils were killed and maimed.

Who cares UN? Now it s cheaper than a prostitute from Bombay red light area, If Russia, china and NAM take our side why we care bloody west good for nothing and do nothing. Sri Lanka is not signed international tribunal court, Security Council is hammered by Russia and China, what else?
UN is tooth less to get Israel, nothing can do in Darfuer, North Korea hammered South Korea yet UN spine less,
When LTTE faced its last day no west managed to save LTTE becasue there spine is mortgaged to India and China,
