Sri Lanka President defuses Maldivian tension

The political deadlock experienced by the Maldives came to an end with the intervention of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said a President s Office spokesman yesterday evening.

The Maldives plunged into a political crisis after the Cabinet appointed by the incumbent President Mohammed Nasheed resigned enmasse due to lack of cooperation from the Opposition which enjoys a majority in Parliament (Majlis).

President Rajapaksa flew to Male to defuse political tension between the ruling party and the Opposition on an invitation of Maldivian President yesterday morning. He was warmly welcomed by the Maldivian Vice President on his arrival at Male and he was accorded a guard of honour.

President Rajapaksa had separate discussions with his Maldivian counterpart Mohammed Nasheed and the Opposition members over the political crisis in the Maldives. He also met the Speaker of the 77 member Parliament and had an extensive discussion on this matter.

President Rajapaksa has advised the Maldivian authorities to appoint a committee comprising the members of the ruling party and the Opposition to seek a viable solution for the crisis. He has got both parties agreed to solve this matter through a committee.

The Sri Lankan President met Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament Abdullah Shahid and several other leaders during this visit. President Rajapaksa s discussion with his Maldivian counterpart focused on the promotion of tourism industry and economic ties between the two countries.

Several other issues which have direct relation with the two countries were also discussed.

President Rajapaksa also met former President Abdul Gayoom yesterday morning. External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris who is in Male on a two-day official visit was present during the discussions.
