India and Sri Lanka To Set Up Budhist International University

Monday, 28 June 2010 - 8:04 PM SL Time

India and Sri Lanka will jointly set up the first international Buddhist University near Sanchi to boost cultural and educational ties.

Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the visiting Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the setting up of the university.

`After my meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other leaders, we have decided on setting up a Buddhist University in a 65 acre land in the Buddhist Sanchi near Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal`, Chauhan said.

Giving details, Chauhan said this would be a joint venture involving the Government of India, the Sri Lankan government, the Madhya Pradesh government and the Mahabodhi society.

He said the state government has decided to provide 25 million Sri Lankan rupees for the purpose and would draw up the plans for setting up of the university soon.

The proposal was mooted during the visit of former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake on October 31 last year in Sanchi.

Chauhan said his government would connect the seven important Buddhist circuits in the state through infrastructure of international standards to enable Sri Lankan and other Buddhist tourists to visit the sites.

On his meeting with Rajapaksa, Chauhan said: `The relations between Sri Lanka and India have been strong. Our state government is also proposing to send a trade delegation to the Island nation to widen the scope of bilateral economic cooperation.`

Chauhan said Rajapaksa had agreed for setting up of a steering committee comprising of all the stakeholders to give shape to the decision to set up the university.

The President also agreed to consider direct flights between Colombo and Bhopal, once the airport in the state capital is given international airport status.

The Chief Minister said Bhopal airport is expected to get international rating by the end of the year. Besides this, an airstrip will also be laid in Sanchi for charter planes, he said.

The proposed Buddhist university is expected to be affiliated to the one being run by the Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society in Sri Lanka, according to a report.

Meanwhile, Chauhan said Buddhist countries like Japan and Korea are also proposed to be involved in affairs of the University to give it an comprehensive international status.

Madhya Pradesh will also hold a Sri Lanka Week later this year in Sanchi and had invited the Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister DM Jayaratne on the occasion.

In the picture is the great stupa of sanchi, a budhist pilgrim spot, in Madhya Pradesh, India. The structure is believed to contain the relics of Buddah.

Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the visiting Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Chief Minister Shivraj Chauhan is a senior BJP leader and Madhyapradesh is one of the biggest states in India.

I guess Cheeman will now be struggling to recruit people in Chennai to stage protest in front of BJP office and stop trains going to Madhya Pradesh!
:))))

Egg on my face? :))))

How stupid is that to ask that question under this very thread, chennaiguuy? :))))

Isn't time to realize how big a strategic blunder was opposing IIFA? When you threaten or promise, you need to deliver, or else you look juvenile.

A BJP chief minister in Sri Lanka, Salman Khan shooting a movie making the whole boycott threat a laughing stock, while 'we tamil' comedians watching helplessly on the sidelines, while delivering not so funny lines!

:)))))))))

lol !

investing 1.1 Billion Rs of taxpayer money & boycotting it for a brunch is very juvenile !

When you threat or promise, you need to deliver, or else you look juvenile.

Mahinda promised big stars to Hifa, GSP+, no war crime panel & host of other election promises & you say he is not looking juvenile in not getting things done ?

He is now going all out in handing over North to KP the Interpol terrorist...

I cant see a STATESMAN in the making anywhere in the world like him !

LMAO ...

Chennaiguuy,

According to you, a bollywood movie with salman costs 200 crore (2 billion) indian rupees. That is 4 billion sri lankan rupees.

Now Salman Khan is shooting the movie in SL. Consider he spends atleast 50% of 4 billion there in production, I think SL has got back its 1.1 billion on IIFA with interest!
:)))))

Now imagine, the movie does well and inspire viewers to visit Sri lanka! The return on investment looks very high here.

I think your own maths is biting you back now! :))))

Rs billion on iifa, and now SLTPB to cough out for Salman Khan and Asin

By Rathindra Kuruwita

The Sri Lanka Tourist Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has borne the total expenditure for the iifa 2010 in Colombo, sources from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) say. Indian owners of iifa Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd did not spend a single rupee on the event, and the total income from ticket sales has been less than 15 million rupees.

Salman Khan and Asin are expected to visit Sri Lanka and scout locations for a month with SLTPB invitation, and we will bear the total expenses of that visit as well. This is done at a time when we have already spent 300 million over our annual budget, said a SLTPB source.

The SLTPB spent a whopping one billion rupees for the iifa. Meanwhile out of the 500 tickets allocated to be sold among Sri Lankans only a meagre 75 have been sold while 85 have been given to various sponsors and artistes. But the remaining 340 tickets were distributed free among various government ministers and officials from the presidential secretariat. The SLTPB expected to cover at least 20% of the expenses from ticket sales.
170 tickets were given to ministers and family members while another 170 was given to presidential secretariat officials. Srilankan airlines gave away 750 free tickets and we booked 75 hotel suites. This has been a financial disaster, our source said.
