Well said Anil,
Those who protest are scared of their potential jobs,..
we do not have private medical, engineering, agri, vet or art ,science faculties in SL.
We do, We have a Private Medical school at Malambe, which is affiliated with Waterloo University, Canada for medical students,. I know a couple of students who transferred from that to Waterloo and already obtained their medical degrees. One of them is working as a psychiatric assistant (in training) in Sri Lanka.
We have the Institute of Chemistry that teaches Chemistry and Management which offered degrees over 25 years now. It's a 4 years degree and the last graducted batch consisted of 96 graduates and 16 first classes, out of which 80% are going abroad for their Ph.D's.. Others are holding leading positions in Sri Lanka, as Chemists, Lab managers, QA managers, business owners etc.
Those are two examples I know.. in theory, Open University of Sri Lanka is also a sort of a private University, it produces many graduates who have good positions in many leading companies.
NIBM is also a private institution, and it's collaborated with the University of Ireland, many do postgraduate degrees after that.
Funny enough, some University students also follow these 'Private Institution Degrees' and their Protesting colleagues don't know anything about it. Also most of those Faculty members are in the private institutions are also the University lecturers....

If you begin charging students tuition, no one will be able to afford except the rich kids from Colombo and Jaffna.
If you think its only kids Col. and Jaffna can afford foreign Uni's. Then you have been out of the real world for too long. I think its time for you to go on a vacation to SL. :) |

The selection process should be the same for the public universities and those who get selected must be rewarded with scholarships for their hard work. Then from the rest of the folks who couldn't get to public universities should be given an opportunity to go to private universities at their expense, but federal grant should be available for those who can not afford,....and tell those village burgers to shut the hell up

I go every year and know who can afford and cannot. Most students from rural areas cannot even afford the visa fee. Most go our using scholarships. It is a bad idea to charge tuition. They do have the open university where they charge but the quality of students is very poor |

When the system not offer any solutions to students who qualifies for higher studies they will turn to other ways....students who can afford will manage to, but poor students will suffer even without entering unis.
only 50% pass O/L's and A/L's may be worse, then what will happen to students who qualifies to Uni's but not get a chance to enter due to lack of uni's...?
No country has this system of Mark's for Uni's.../ If fail to accomadate all A/L passed students to Uni's, why oppose private Uni's...?
It is simply discrimination whom did pass A/L's.
Better scrap the system which offers rural students a hand at the expence of others. |
