Sri Lanka to propose an Over 40 international cricket tournament to the ICC

Sunday, 16 May 2010 - 4:05 PM SL Time

Sri Lanka Cricket Board is mulling over the establishment of a new world cricket tournament, according to a latest report coming out of SLC. It is learnt that the Board officials are preparing a document to propose an `Over 40 International Cricket Series` in all formats of the game - namely Tests, 50/50 and T20. The proposal will be tabled at the next ICC meeting in June 2010.

`This is an exciting prospect,` a Cricket Board official said on condition of anonymity. `The cricket playing nations constitute a population of over 2 billion people. 40% of this population, that is over 800 million people, are over 40 years of age. We are looking at this huge market to promote this series, there is a lot of potential there. After all it is only fair that talented cricketers of over 40 years are given the chance to play international cricket. They still have a lot of cricket left in them. If fans want their idols not to retire and continue to play, then this is the place for them to be.`

`Sri Lanka has been the pioneer of many aspects in world cricket. We introduced pinch hitting during the first 15 Overs of the 50 Over game. Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluvitharana took the world by storm in the 1996 World Cup which was successfully copied by other Test playing nations. We also introduced `Dilscoop` shot to the cricket books during the T20 World Cup in 2009 (a reference to the shot invented by Sri Lankan opener T.M. Dilshan which sends the ball over the wicket keeper`s head). So it is hoped that Sri Lanka will be the pioneer of Over 40 International Cricket as well.`

Asked about the possibility of pioneering a world Inter Parliamentary Cricket Series now that we are blessed with several talented cricketers in our Legislature, the official disconnected the line saying `this is something that our Secretary General of Parliament has to decide. The MPs do not come under the Sri Lanka Cricket Board protocol.`

Every dark cloud has a silver lining. So something good will come out of it.

Pls refer to the text:

Roshan,

Not really. This is more or less like a supplement.

Berty Anna,

If I remember right we had a over 50 Cricket tournament before..or is it over 40...

Yes this is not something new. The proposal now is to conduct official tournamnets that run parallel with the existing set up !!

Berty Bro,
You are right, it was for the over 40. A team comprising of Bandula Warnapura, Flavian Aponso, Tony Opatha once participated in this tournament.

Great news - now sana can continue to play till he's 75 & he will not require political influence to be in the team.

Things to avoid if you are over 40

When I was 12 years old, my father sat me down to warn me of the dangers of alcohol. 'Son,' he said gravely, 'never make a martini with too much vermouth.'

Later in life, schools often provided me with lists of illegal substances and their negative side effects, though I noticed educators usually skipped the most obvious one, which is that drugs make people really boring to listen to.

They acted as if making it through childhood without taking on bad habits and addictions meant you were home free, when exactly the opposite is true: If anything, it gets worse the older you are, because one of the consequences of being an adult is that your actions result in adult consequences. You need a new list, so here it is: A List of Things to Avoid If You Are Over 40.

Alcohol. Even if you've gone easy on the vermouth, there are still serious downsides to alcohol consumption, including but not limited to the sense that you're a good dancer. There is almost no phone call made after drinking alcohol that the caller doesn't wind up regretting. Side effects can include the sudden onset of Karaoke Participation Syndrome and the inexplicable disorder known as Let's All Get Tattoos.

Waking up. Side effects can include disorientation, fatigue and a sense that the person looking at you in the mirror cannot possibly have aged that much in a single night. Waking up is one of the ways you can determine whether you've had an attack of Let's All Get Tattoos Disorder. Of course, the alternative to waking up is sort of negative, too what we call a lose-lose proposition. But if you're over 40, you're used to that sort of thing already.
