Sri Lanka`s Ministry of Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Services says it will carry out raids from today to nab errant traders who do not sell commodities especially rice at reduced prices.

Addressing a media conference held at the Government Information Department on Tuesday (09) the Minister of trade Bandula Gunawardena emphasized that the law will be strictly imposed from today on traders who sell rice at a higher price than the government set price.

The Minister pointed out that the Consumer Affairs Authority has received an income of over 22 million rupees in 2009 from fines collected from the errant traders.

The set price for a kilo of Samba rice is 70 rupees while its wholesale price is 63 rupees. The wholesale price of a kilo of Nadu rice is 52 rupees while the wholesale price of a kilo of Kekulu rice has dropped to 47 rupees.

The Minister emphasized that there are no shortages in the market. He said agricultural products from the north and east such as potatoes and onions are now reaching the southern markets.

He requested the public to inform the Consumer Protection Authority through the relevant Divisional Secretary or nearest Government Agent wherever such infringements occur or are suspected to have occurred.
