The Military police last night arrested former army commander and defeated opposition presidential candidate, Gen (Retd) Sarath Fonseka, over his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the government and assassinate the incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Military spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe and Director General of Media Center of National Security Lakshman Hulugalle last night said that the former army commander had been arrested by the military police and he would be produced before a military court of inquiry.
He was taken into custody from his office at Rajakeeya Mawatha in Colombo around 9 p.m.
His arrest was made following inquiries launched by the Criminal Investigation Division and the Terrorist Investigation Division into the alleged conspiracy.
Hulugalle said that apart from the charges of plotting a military coup and conspiring to assassinate the president, Fonseka had also been charged with causing rifts in the army during his tenure as army commander as well as the Chief of Defence Staff.
Military spokesman Major-General Samarasinghe further said the arrest was related to offences Fonseka had committed as the army commander and Chief of Defence Staff.
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem, who was at the scene, was quoted by foreign media agencies as saying, `He was dragged away in a very disgraceful manner in front of our own eyes.`
Fonseka`s media secretary Senaka de Silva was also arrested along with him, Opposition Member of Parliament Mano Ganeshan told the media.
Fonseka was presiding over a meeting attended by three political party leaders Ganeshan, Hakim and Somawansa Amarasinghe, when he was arrested. Also present at the meeting were JVP MP Sunil Handunetti and several others.
President Rajapaksa was away in Russia on a three-day state visit and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was also overseas at the time of Fonseka s arrest, sources told The Island.

| Dr. Fraud loves to kill war heroes, political opponents and Journalists. The disappearance of Pregeeth Ekanaliyagoda, a political analyst, journalist and visual designer, attached to LankaENews the arrest of Chandana Sirimalwatta, the editor of the Lanka newspaper, the assassination of Chandaradasa Naiwadu, the JVP Urban Council member and the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga are some examples. Disrespecting/expulsion of war heroes and helping to assassinate those such as the late Janaka Perera shows the pedigree of our national leader.!! |

As you know by now, former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka was falsely arrested and dragged away forcibly by the same military that he served so faithfully for over 40 years.
The government has alleged that the General violated the military code of conduct during his tenure as the Army Commander.
The General was arrested by the military despite the fact that he is retired and is now a civilian. Therefore such an arrest, if at all, should have been conducted by the police. If the government alleges that military law still applies to General Fonseka, the law stipulates that he should be arrested by an officer holding a similar rank. This was not the case. Under the direction of the Secretary of Defense, the arrest was made by Major General Manawadu an officer two ranks his junior violating all military and civilian protocol.
The arresting officer insulted and dragged the General away when he questioned his arrest.
He has not been allowed a lawyer, due procedure of detention, or even a call to his family - as yet no one knows where he is detained or what is being done to him.
It has come to light that the administration has made elaborate plans to kill the General, their claim being that he was shot while resisting his captors.
Although we are unable to verify this fact, we believe that he is being held at the Navy camp in Rangala.
As a nation, we should be ashamed of our leaders and of ourselves.
For 30 years he fought on our behalf and risked his life for each and every one of us.
Be it under threat of prosecution or even death - he never faltered in his duty and never once disobeyed his honest conscience.
Now it is your duty to do what you can to save his life.
Most importantly, contact your politicians, religious leaders, media, civil society organizations and foreign embassies and make your voice heard to save the life of General Fonseka and democracy for our nation. |

The President of Sri Lanka Hon'ble Mahinda Rajapaksa was abroad when the butcher tiger terrorist, VP Balumekka was hunted down while resisting arrest by the SLDF.
Last night, S.F.Kalawedda was arrested by the Military Police.
When the MP entered SFK's office, he resisted arrest.
But he was not gunned down by the MP.
They treated Kalawedda in a respectful manner.
His history as the head of the SLA will come to light soon.
What if he was killed at the Rajakeeya Place office??????

The presence of the Rajapaksa Brothers is not necessary at the spot of arrest or even in the country.
To arrest a Kalawedda, VIPs should not intervene.
Rajapaksa brothers are politicians and not policemen to arrest a retired army man !

The whole plot of Rajapakse brothers are getting a back lash now from the rank and file of Rajapakse supporters.
MR , according to reliable sources are pissed off with the brothers, as Malwatha Mahanayake came out and showed him the middle finger. He is hitting the bottle heavily .
EC commissioner and his family is under 24 hr watch with threat imposed on their lives fearing defection and spilling the beans. |
