In a move widely speculated by the world`s media, International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to launch a world Test championship that would see
Sri Lanka relegated to Tier B along with lesser powers of world cricket both on cricket strength and financial strength, but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials are still blissfully ignorant of the plans.
`This is news to me. We have not heard anything about this. It may be mere speculation in internet media reports. I cannot comment anything on it` said SLC interim committee chief D.S. de Silva.
SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga who will attend ICC Meetings next week said that the proposal is not on the agenda of the meeting.
`We have not been informed of those moves. Anyway, our stand is that all Test playing nations should be treated equally` Ranatunga said.
Meanwhile, media reports claimed that
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made it clear that it would not support the proposal to have a two-tier international calendar that would be discussed by the ICC committees next week in Johannesburg.
Test-playing nations
India,
Australia, England and South Africa are supporting a two-tier system of competitions in the new Future Tours Program that runs from 2012 to 2020.
The proposed system would have a relegation and promotion system.
Sri Lanka would be slated in the lower tier alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh and the West Indies.
`We have seen no such proposal coming from anyone but even if it does come up for discussion during the ICC meetings we will reject it outright,` PCB Chief Operating Officer Wasim Bari had told media.
Tim May, the chief executive of cricket`s international players` association (FICA), had confirmed that the plans are very much on for the Test championship. `There is a model up for discussion which features two divisions and promotion-relegation. Whether it has the backing of anyone, I`m not sure.` May said it was still not good news for cricket`s lesser powers. The draft plan most likely to glean favour features the bigger nations playing each other more often than they play the less powerful countries ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has claimed that England and India are the only countries standing in the way of his proposed Championship. `I would like to convince people that the way to ensure Test cricket survives is through a championship model,` he said. `The only two countries who do not see the argument are India and England, but debate is growing all the time. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) seem to have come out in favour but when I met the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently it was the wrong time to tackle them in detail. They were too high on the Ashes.
`I don`t understand their thinking. The original plan was to have a four-year cycle for the championship, which protects icon series like the Ashes. It was very do-able. Our Future Tours Programme will meet soon as the current schedule runs to May 2012.
