Pool of 30 picked for Youth World Cup

The junior selection committee has picked a strong pool of 30 players for the forthcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup including a rookie leg spinner from Nugawela Central who is yet to make his presence felt in an all island schools tournament but has high potential according to selectors.

While including Nugawela Central spinner Saranga Rajaguru in a strong spin department that has players who have picked up over 100 wickets last season, the selectors also have brought in Andry Berenger and Maduka Liyanapathirana who despite performing well, were surprisingly overlooked for Sri Lanka Under-19 tours early.

The Junior National Selection Committee chairman Sunil Wickramanayake told The Island yesterday that the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the forthcoming ICC World Cup will be selected from this pool of 30 players.

The pool is a mix of talented players from both Colombo and outstation schools and has several players who meet the eligibility criteria regarding age to play in one more world cup.

Among the players selected, St. Peter s College paceman Chathura Peiris is the most experienced player having played in the last World Cup and featuring in almost all Sri Lanka Under-19 tours since 2007.

Wickramanayake said that Chathura Peiris, Bhanuka Rajapakse, Rumesh Buddhika and Andry Berenger are among the probable players for the captaincy.
