For the first time in recent history of the Sri Lankan judiciary, a total of 131 suspects were remanded in connection with a high profile single criminal case.
Kalutara Chief Magistrate Anura Seneviratne remanded 28 suspects on Sunday and Additional Magistrate Ms Shanthani Dias remanded another 103 yesterday. All of them were arrested in connection with the attack on the Masjidul Rahuman Mosque at Beruwela on Saturday.
The suspects were produced by the Beruwela Police and they were remanded to fiscal custody till August 6. According to Police, the suspects belong to all strata of the Muslim community and included some respected Islamic religious dignitaries.
Two people were killed in the attack, 12 others sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospital while over one hundred push cycles and motor cycles were burnt and considerable damage caused to the Rahuman Mosque building.
A Police curfew was imposed in certain areas in Beruwela on from 6.00 a.m. on Sunday as the situation was getting out of control from Saturday night onwards. The curfew was lifted at 6.00 a.m. on Monday. Police said the situation was well under control yesterday but they have tightened security with additional policemen pressed into service from adjoining Police stations since they did not want to take any risk.
The trouble began after a sermon by an Imam (cleric) on Friday after Jumma prayers at the nearby Buhari Mosque where the planned Islamic religious festivities to be conducted at the Beruwela Rahuman Mosque on the following day came under criticism.
According to Police sources, inter religious rivalry between two Muslim groups that had been precipitating in several predominantly Muslim areas in the country since last year culminated in Saturday s clashes.
Apparently instigated by this sermon, a crowd of Muslims in the area had raided the Rahuman Mosque in Beruwela during festivities on Saturday morning, creating havoc causing the deaths of two and destruction to mosque property and vehicles belonging to those who attended the festivities.
Following this incident, sporadic violence erupted at various places in Beruwela and Police were compelled to impose the curfew.
Certain Muslim politicians believe that a powerful group of ultra rich Muslims in an oil rich Gulf State was behind this turmoil that began last year at Kattankudy in the East.

This is a very Un-Islamic act by the Muslims. All these happened because of the ideological differences and lack of knowledge about the Islam itself. Islam in Sri Lanka is in transition period due to the new knowledge gained by Muslims by the advance in technology such as Internet as well as by people working in Middle Eastern Countries gaining first hand knowledge about Islamic practices. Many un-islamic practices such as these FEASTS in Mosques were practiced for centuries because no one knew Islam properly due to the lack of Arabic knowledge. Further many un-Islamic practices were brought to Sri Lanka by South Indian Muslims those were basically imitated from non-Muslims of India. Its very difficult change the established believes among the Older generations of Muslims and also some of the Religious leaders or priests make a living by these so called un-Islamic rituals an due to this, they would not allow the True Islam to come forward because of fear of their livelihood. Blaming some Middle Eastern Country for this shameful act by Muslims themselves is not correct.

The whole problem here the way i see it is that some peopel not being able to tolerate another's view and wishes...
if a certain party wants to do things their own way why the f others can't let those people get on with their lives?
as long as it's not against the law of the land...folks should be able to do what they want to do... religion or no religion...
many of present day problems are due to lack of tolerance to others...to those who are different from us...
bloody disgraceful!
i hope amongst the detailness there's also the 'cleric' who instigated this violence...

| This is a very worrying development for everyone in Sri Lanka. I see the hand of the fundamentalist Wahhabi sect (to which Osama Bin Laden belongs) behind these troubles. The Wahhabi sect saw an opportunity after the tsunami and got involved with relief and charitable work in Sri Lanka. They are probably behind a push to force Sri Lankan muslims to adopt fundamentalist practices like wearing the burkha and strict observance of their brand of Islam, which is totally intolerant of other religions. The saddest victims are the moderate muslims who want to get along with everyone. |

Muslims killing Muslims in Iraq began after the illegal invasion by the criminal Americans. Of course, the criminal invasion would NOT have been possible if not for the total collaboration of neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar etc.
You are right. They are all stupid donkeys killing each other. |

I'm hearing this has something to do with funds coming in from a country in the Gulf, and about who gets this fund. Not quite sure what's going on though, so take that as a rumor only.
Would love to know what exactly was said in the sermon that erupted this violence. |

Indeed it is worrying to see the Srilankan Muslims getting divided into various sects like in Iraq and other Arab countries.Unfortunately majority of the educated young Muslims especially those expats in the middle-east have been misled and they have embraced a different brand of Islam and are trying to propagate that to our brothers and sisters back at home. They are fully backed by various organizations operating in middle-east and other countries with hidden agendas. They receive large sums allocated for charities for building masjids in SriLanka such masjids have mushroomed across the country. One such mosque was the one destroyed on Saturday.Large majority of these youth uphold the doctrines ofAlQaeda and Taleban(who destroyed the treasured Buddha Statues in Bamyan valley in Afghanistan. In short these are extremists and they have a long term plan to achieve their objectives. With their half-backed education and money power they are strong now.
In contrary the Buhary Masjid built in mid nineteenth century has a handful of branches in the country ( a mere 17 to 18 mosques) and it is the moderate Muslims who attend these worshiping places for their prayers and recitals( no loudspeakers used )and they are detached from politics and other tamashas going around the modern world.
The saying goes 'United we stand,Divided we fall' and what brings all Muslim Sects together is stronger than what put all Muslims sects apart |

Either you are a Muslim or some one who has some idea about Muslims. But, what is the basis for saying that 'a large majority of these youth uphold the doctrines ofAlQaeda and Taleban'? Have you conducted a poll among the Muslim youth to make such a statement?
It is irresponsible statements like these which create racial tension and conflict. We have just emerged from one hellish and bloody conflict. Lets not sow the seeds for another. |
