Sun, Jul 5, 2009, 09:24 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka today said that consumer prices increased by 28 percent this year in Sri Lanka due to global crisis including the financial meltdown in major industrial countries.

Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that a positive change in the country`s economy next year is based on the developments such as progress in the agriculture industry in the North and East and the transportation of its products to the south.

He also predicts that the time when Sri Lanka will own a glowing economy in the Asian region is close at hand. The government has taken steps to incorporate all segments of society within this development process, he said.

In Thailand and in most parts of the world prices remain very stable whilst SL is becoming way too expensive.

By 28 percent? Holy cow! Seriously, here we don't feel the heat of recession at all. Everything is going pretty normal. I mean it. Except for the corporates who doing outsourcing.

I think Bandula should have left to do tuition to A/L student where he would have been much productive.

Here in Thailand stores sell a can of coke for around 35 rupees, why does it cost at stores in SL some 125 rupees ?

Run down taxis charge 2000 rupees for a hop from the airport to Negombo, on Phuket visitors pay 1200 rupees for the 40 km from the airport to Patong and get the poshest vehicles. For the 8000 rupees that vans charge from Kandy to the Airport i could fly the 2000 km up down to Bangkok. ($60)

Run down beach operators demand 300 rupees for a small glass of watery Papaya juice. For that amount you get a king size menue with Salmon Steak, Sushi, Tempura, Chicken and a beer inside a clean, top ranking AC equipped Japanese restaurant.

Prices have become unreal in Sri Lanka and the official government figures have nothing to do with reality.

Our group runs a restaurant in the heart of SL and developments since 2005 are brutal for nearly all business operators with shrinking purchasing power.

Certainly that has nothing to do with the global crises, this is home made strictly as mad money printing has blown it all through the roof.

because coke cans are imported and taxed. if you by a bottled coke it may be par or slightly higher,

Run down taxis charge 2000 rupees for a hop from the airport to Negombo, on Phuket visitors pay 1200 rupees for the 40 km from the airport to Patong and get the poshest vehicles.

becuase SL economy is still not grown enough to be taxi run on meter. The airport taxi operators would get only one trip a day and if lucky two trips. So economy is not grown enough to get advantage scale of economy.

For the 8000 rupees that vans charge from Kandy to the Airport i could fly the 2000 km up down to Bangkok. ($60)

we have to wait for somebody to setup a budget airline (not mihin) to get these rates.

Certainly that has nothing to do with the global crises, this is home made strictly as mad money printing has blown it all through the roof.

I think this is correct. Cabraal said he had bought hundred + million $ in last month to keep Rs without appreciating. So he must have printed $100+ million worth of rupees.

GOSL should make imported GOODS very expensive. By that way they should manufacturing in Sri Lanka.

COKE like products never help Sri Lanka. IT will create more obese, addicted and sick population and COKE will never pay for negative health consequences.

Even the west including northa AEmrcia has lot of protection for their business.

Sri Lanka don't do anything like that.

Hi Emperor,

schon klar, dass du den kurzen Sommer magst. Das Rheintal ist dann sehr nett. Habe aber gelesen, dass es jetzt schon wieder k hler wird f r eine Weile.

Phuket ist meistens recht heiss und entspannt.
