Thivya
Many thanks. Delightful reading and most informative. I am in no way knowledgeable enough to discuss the matter or even give my opinion. So I dont want to insult your intelligence by trying to make comments about the post. I wanted to know the origins.
The only point I would like to make (not as a counter arguement but as an observation) is that the Kandy Perahera dancers dont only do Vannams but also other different dancers. Pantheri is actually one of them which apparently has origins to the Tamil culture. Some others are Daula, Gam Madu and Devol Madu dancing.
One question I have is these vannamas represent different movements. For instance Thuranga vannama represents movements of a horse. Gajaga vannama represents that of an elephant. Do Tamil dancing vannamas also have similar dances which are dedicated to represent the movements of an animal? Just curious.
This is very good information and your contribution here is most valuable. By the way, I could not see this post in your space (perhaps that is because there were quite a many)
