Most of the former members of the LTTE want a chance to lead a normal life. They should be provided the necessary skill set, training and small-business loans (if needed) to re-start their lives. At this point, Mahinda Rajapakse can safely ignore the noise generated by the self-apppointed 'leaders' of the Tamil Diaspora. They are speaking for fewer and fewer people. Some in the Diaspora will never accept what happened during the last few months. Nor are they prepared to accept a future where Tamils and Sinhalese can live side by side in a peaceful Sri Lanka as people of one country. But, their actions cannot be allowed to throw wrenches in the current and future lives of Sri Lankan Tamils - who still live in Sri Lanka.
I also request the Sri Lankan President to accelerate the process of re-construction and re-settlement of refugees held in the camps in Vavuniyia. I know that SLDF is trying to find all the hidden weapons caches. But, these people are growing bitter day by day. This bitterness and a sense of humiliation will pose bigger headaches in the long term -a situation ripe for emergence of another insurgency. The Tamil people I know are generous towards those who generous and compassionate towards them - especially in time of need like this. Mahind Rajapakse should do what he can to reach out to these people. Ignore everything else.
