This is an exaggerated fear I think. Generally, monks are not attracting a big vote base and they dont have a significant power in the Parliament. Also, any other person can contest like these few monks.
However, contesting in elections are fundamentally against the 'should be' behavior of monks, since that aggregates the greediness.
But, advising politicians is always correct, as its a part of Buddhist culture, to advise rulers to conduct the administration in correct way. The bulk of the monks are not going beyond this level.
The Buddhist factor in Sri lanka always helping positively for the society. If you check, 100s of elderly people, ladies, and kids, were supported by SLA in the late stage of the war, due to the combination of this Buddhist factor and inherent discipline of the army. |
