Though central bank officials had expressed confidence the loan would come by the end of the month, diplomats say much work remains and the IMF has not made its usual customary statement that a staff-level agreement has been made.

Some investors have been cautious because of uncertainty over what effect the loan's conditions could have on the rupee , while foreign investors hold investments in the local bourse.

The bourse fell 0.86 percent or 20.93 points to 2419.01, its third fall in the week.

Captain Ali is in Colombo port now. :)
