Washington (PTI): Observing that a lot needs to be done in Sri Lanka, Obama Administration's point man for South Asia today said the US would continue to press for the 'political reconciliation' with the ethnic Tamil community.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake said there has been an improvement in access to the internally displaced persons after the end of the war between the Tamil Tigers and Lankan security forces.

'Overall access has improved since the immediate aftermath of the fighting, but more progress is needed,' he said in his testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.

'We continue to press the Sri Lankan government to grant humanitarian relief organisations full and unfettered access to the internally displaced persons residing in camps in the north, and to engage in political reconciliation with Sri Lanka's Tamil minority,' Blake said.

'The actions the Sri Lankan government takes now, in the aftermath of the war, with respect to both humanitarian relief and political inclusions for minorities, will be important to securing an end to terrorism and a lasting peace,' he added.

Senior U.S. diplomat on Thursday pressed Sri Lanka to reach out to former rebels and to allow aid workers unfettered access to people forced to live in military-run camps following the end of a bloody 25-year civil war last month.
Robert Blake, the assistant secretary of state for South Asia, also urged Nepal's Maoists to embrace democracy and to avoid a return to fighting that killed some 13,000 during an insurgency.

In Sri Lanka, relief workers' access to the displacement camps has improved in the aftermath of fighting, 'but more progress is needed,' Blake, the former U.S. ambassador to Sri Lanka, said at a House of Representatives Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing on South Asia.

He called for the rapid resettlement of those living in the camps in the north of the country, where the rebel Tamil Tigers had their stronghold until they were crushed last month.

Aid groups have said that they are granted only limited access to the camps. The government says certain restrictions are necessary for security reasons.

Blake said that Sri Lanka is at a crucial moment. What the government does now to include minorities in the political process and to help those suffering in camps, he said, will do much to determine whether a lasting peace, free of terrorism, takes hold in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, he said, should pursue political reconciliation, allow local elections in the north and look for ways to share power with Tamils and other minorities.
