senior Buddhist monk has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a teenager in a Sri Lankan temple, officials said Monday.

The monk, who heads a temple in the coastal town of Matara, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Colombo, allegedly abused the 15-year-old girl over a period of time, said Dimutu Galappatti, spokesman for the National Child Protection Authority.

Several pornographic videotapes and contraceptives were found in the monk's possession at the temple, Galappatti said.

In 2003, two Buddhist monks and eight other men were arrested and accused of sexually abusing 11 children orphaned by the island's two-decade civil war.

For this reason she herself needed to be fertile and was provided by a male partner, hence the performance of sexual act was accepted by the community for their own welfare.

Debbie are you going this sunday to protect him ?

A group of Buddhist monks and a mob of locals destroyed a church in Sri Lanka and attacked the pastor earlier this month, adding to the already escalating anti-Christian violence in the south Asia country.

Calvary Church in Thalahena, Malabe, northeast of the capital Colombo, was destroyed after a rumor spread that Christians had attacked a local Buddhist temple. A mob of some 500 villagers had descended on Calvary church and surrounded it as Sunday service was about to take place on July 6, persecution watchdog group Release International recently reported.

Traditionally Indians believe that our religion protects us from any infection and HIV prevention has primarily concentrated on heterosexual transmission. A staggering number of unsafe sexual acts take place at these religious festivals. In Kerala at Kottankulangara, on the last 2 days of a 10-day festival, men and boys have to dress as women to participate and light festive lamps in obeisance to Goddess Veerabattari Devi as part of a ritual vow or oath that needs to be fulfilled. The cross-dressed men and boys lead a proces-sion of the Goddess into the village holding lamps and it is the prerogative of the onlookers to 'eve tease' them in a spor-tive manner.

In Tamil Nadu, in mid April Alis/Hijras (transgender) gather from all over India to participate in the annual Koovakkam festival where they get married to the Lord Koothandavar and once the marriage is consummated, the follow-ing day the Lord is sacrificed and the Alis/Hijras become widows.

damn raped by hijra? who is that fu&k? buuhaaa godzillaaAA?? hak hak
What is most significant is that though interventions for HIV exist for both MSMs and Alis/Hijras in India, these programs have neglected to educate the need for safe sex during such festivals. Conclusion: Any penetrative sexual act needs protection, irrespective of its religious sanction or otherwise, and MSM HIV intervention programs need to address and take the above issue into account, and educate the community-accordingly.

'I have great faith in the goddess,' says Sheetal, as she drapes her orange sequinned saree. 'But for us kothis (feminine men), it's also an opportunity to dress up, because many of our parents are not aware of our real identity. At least, in the name of God, I can openly wear a saree.' Sheetal and her friends are part of Sahodaran, a Chennai-based group that works for the prevention of HIV/AIDS among homosexuals. Sheetal has been coming here for the last three years. Maya is 'making her debut', and is mercilessly teased by her friends.
