Exports to the UAE increased from Rs.62,915 crore to Rs.65,377 crore, Saudi Arabia from Rs.14,923 crore to Rs.18,306 crore and Iran from Rs.1,091 crore to Rs.1,201 crore. India also did well in exporting to Egypt, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Algeria, Iraq and Bahrain.
Mr. Velmurugan said around 91 Special Economic Zones were coming up in the State 49 had been notified and were operational, 17 received in-principle nod and 25 were yet to be approved.
Delivering a special address at the 173rd annual general meeting of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the Indo-Gulf conference on current economic scenario in association with ASSOCHAM and Commerce and Industry Ministry, he said, The trade is growing by leaps and bounds and many products exported from India are from Tamil Nadu.
Mentioning that the State Nadu attracted Foreign Direct Investment of $8 billion in the last three years, he said 2010 would witness $3 billion investment in automobile-related sectors. By 2010-2011, the State will emerge among the top 10 car manufacturers in the world with a production capacity of 1.3 million cars, apart from commercial vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
Srinivasan K. Swamy, who was re-elected the MCCI president for 2009-2010, said very soon, India would emerge among the top three economies in the world. The Gulf Co-operation Council could gain a lot by exploring the Indian market.
In his keynote address, Ahmad Salem Al Wahishi, chief representative of the League of Arab States Mission in New Delhi, stressed the need for dissemination of knowledge and information to strengthen ties between India and the Arab world. The mission was committed to further promoting stronger trade initiatives and business opportunities.
Larbi Moukhariq, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco in India and dean of the Arab Diplomatic Corps, exuded confidence that Arab world s trade with India would touch $500 billion in the next 10 years.
