Tharjini Sivalingam stands tall in any netball court

Extraordinary talent combined with an awesome height of 6ft 10 inches makes Tharjini stand out in any netball court, here or abroad. Her talent for netball was evident even while at Vayavilan M.M.V. Jaffna when Tharjini was of normal height at age 14. However call it fate or whatever you wish she found herself growing in height in an unprecedented way once she turned 15 years of age. This was in a sense a blessing both for Tharjini and Netball as she rose to unanticipated fame and the game of netball found a solid shooter who dazzled the spectators with her fantastic shooting as a result of her imposing height.

After leaving School, Tharjini entered the University of Batticaloa where this girl with a rare talent for both sports and studies obtained a B.A. degree. While taking part in the inter-University championship in Batticaloa Tharjini was spotted by none other than Trixie Nanayakkara, who with her long years of experience as a coach in netball was able to see that Tharjini who was an exceedingly good player could turn out to be an exceedingly great player and insisted that she move over to Colombo where Ms. Nanayakkara felt she would be instant National Material.

Former militants share a meal at a rehabilitation centre in Welikanda, in eastern Sri Lanka yesterday. Some 150 former combatants belonging to the now defeated Tamil Tiger rebels are being trained in masonry, carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills to help re-integrate them into society.
