Where are the monkeys who predicted the crash of the rupee and balance of payments crisis..
I've been predicting it for years but it still hasn't happened. Lanka has been running at around 25% inflation since 2005 whilst the US has been having inflation under 5%. That should mean a rate of around 160 rupees to the dollar but it hasn't been happening.
Firstly there was the tsunami aid, that held up the rupee, and then there has been the hefty increase in remittances (paradoxically the greater the inflation in Lanka the more money it gets in remittances as people feel obliged to send more money to keep their friends and relatives heads above water).
The government is now counting on another influx of aid money but I for one am sceptical in the short-term, just as there is no sign of a massive increase in tourism.
The hedging fiasco is likely to cost the government around $800 million of the IMF loan. The government can hardly afford to default since it is dependent on short-term bank loans to fund the government deficit.
One thing nobody's mentioning is that they are now having almost daily power cuts in Lanka, as in Chandrika's time. They are claiming the lack of rain, but the truth is that the CEB loses money every kilowatt hour it sells, and is simply cutting its losses, and the government is cutting back on diesel imports to power the generators. Hardly the kind of situation to attract the kind of investment that we are hearing about from the Asian head of the HSBC (coincidentally a Sri Lankan living in Singapore). |
