18 Jun, 2009 16:00:23 - Sri Lanka buys US218mn from forex markets in June: CB Governor
Sri Lanka's central bank has bought 218 million US dollars from forex markets in June on top of 160 million US dollars bought during the last two months, Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal said.
Since a float of the rupee in March ahead of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, the Central Bank has so far bought 378 million US dollars.
The IMF loan has been delayed amid foot dragging by the United States but following the float of the currency, the balance of payments crisis has effectively ended.
The central bank has kept the rupee at 114.90/95 against the US dollar and is buying dollars to prevent it appreciating.
Cabraal said on Wednesday alone the monetary authority had bought more than 20 million US dollars from the market.
Where are the monkeys who predicted the crash of the rupee and balance of payments crisis.. |

Chennai, 18 June, ( Asiantribune.com): Janata Party president Dr. Subramanian Swamy has said there is a need to create an autonomous Tamil state in Sri Lanka. Now that the LTTE is no longer in the picture, we can go ahead and help the Tamils , he told reporters here on Wednesday.Dr Swamy said the U.S., China and Israel which helped Sri Lanka in its war against LTTE terrorism had the moral responsibility to prevail upon President Mahinda Rajapaksa to ensure constitutional guarantee of equality to Tamils.
India also could not shirk its responsibility as it had extended help to Sri Lanka, he said in an apparent reference to supply of defensive weapons and equipment like radars after the LTTE acquired an air arm.
Dr. Swamy, who is visiting the U.S. and will be there till August, said he would meet officials in charge of South Asia in Washington and prevail upon them to put pressure on Sri Lanka.
Dr Swamy said India should not allow Sri Lanka to set up a military base in Kachchativu.
