One additional point by Pharaoah that I missed
Tamils are also banned from working under Sinhalese employers in some parts of East.
Pharaoh since you have quoted this from a UTHR report I do question its validity. These are reports to sensationalise a minor issue with the intent of driving a wedge between communities. TamilNet has excelled in that.
But that is hardly an answer. If indeed there is an organised campaign to limit employment opportunities to tamils it is deplorable (and illegal). Such attempts, as they should be, dont last too long. Sinhala businesses will end up hiring Tamils because that is how it has always been in the East (specially places like Trinco). But I plead you to be objective when you read articles by these peace doves, NGOs and similar agenda folks. They are not helping and all they are doing is to create disharmony between communities.
Also banks in East are full of Sinhalese employees, less than quater are Tamils.
Again, I cant speak for these organisations. It may well be due to the lack of qualified personnel for bank jobs (either over qualified or not adequately qualified). Tamils students who have entered universities would rather work in better places. Some may have found employment else where in the country. Some Tamil youngsters prefer Colombo and other parts of the country than the North east. May be while tamils seek employment elsewhere, banks are sending Singhalease employees to the North east.
But as I mentioned if there is a DELIBERATE attempt to deny employment to any community, that is deplorable. Now that the Terrorism has been defeated, it is up top the govt to defeat such injustices if there are any
You appear to be from the east. Which city/part are you from (if you dont mind my asking?)

Air India about to go bankrupt..
Dont even have money to pay salaries..
Air India rescue package likely
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8104767.stm
The Indian government is likely to announce a bail-out package to its struggling national carrier Air India, the federal aviation minister has said.
The airline has delayed payment of June salaries and incentives to its 31,500 employees by a fortnight.
The state-owned airline posted an annual loss of about 40 billion rupees ($800m), reports say.
This is what a donkey with 3 inch brain said about Air Indi some time ago..

Neelan was not involved in killing people,
There is not enough info about Dr. Neelan on the web, whereas there are so many pages about VP and co.
I hope more articles or even a book are written about him, then future Tamil leaders can learn from him to manage and lead Tamils in the post war era.

Chinkala people are bad.
they should bring all the IDPs to colombo and should find accomodation in Colombo hotels. they should apologize to Tamils. Give employment and the country to Tamils first.
IF there is anything left then chinkala people take it.
Bad...Bad..bad Chinkala people

I couldnt agree more. Neelan was low profile always. I also wish someone documents his thinking. You see, he was more an academic and his political thinking was mostly on the constitutional side and a united Sri Lanka.
Just to put your mind at rest, there will ALWAYS be proper tamil leaders who dont resort to terrorist activities. Give it time. I had lots of hope for few upcoming politicians such as Gajan P. Dont get carried away by their pandering to the LTTE. If they did not they would have get killed. They were merely repeating what they have been told to read (if not...)
The demise of the LTTE will definitely create a more conducive environment for Tamil intellectuals in SL (and believe me there are plenty). Among them you will see politicians emerging.
All these need time but a better, far-sighted leadership among Tamils in SL is unavoidable (and necessary). In that environment folks like KP and hooters like self-apponted fools such as David Poonapillai wont have any role to play.

Air India about to go bankrupt..
Kewl..SLmate do know how to dig deep & take out dirt !
I am impressed !
:-))
In 2007, the Government announced that Air India would be merged with Indian Airlines. As part of the merger process, a new company called the National Aviation Company of India Limited (or NACIL) was established, into which both Air India (along with Air India Express) and Indian Airlines (along with Alliance Air) have been merged.Once the merger is complete, the airline - which will continue to be called Air India - will continue to be headquartered in Mumbai.
India has the world's fastest growing airline industry. However, increasing fuel prices resulted in a 4% decline in air traffic in June 2008. Increasing competition of other major Indian carriers like Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines has pushed Air India to third place in India in terms of market share.
It is due to the merger of Indian Airlines & Air India that has resulted in large payscale issues. It will take some time for the merged unit to show result as happens in any corporate ! |
