Dhoni effigy burnt in hometown after India s T20 exit

June 16, 2009 12:39 pm - Cricket fans in the Jharkhand capital Monday burnt Indian cricket captain and city boy Mahendra Singh Dhoni in effigy to protest India s exit from the ICC Twenty20 world cup following successive defeats in matches against the West Indies and England.

Police patrolling near the under-construction house of Dhoni at Harmu road in the city has been beefed up. There were fears that angry fans could also attack it, like 2007 when Indiawas ousted from the world cup. The protesters had demolished the boundary wall, but after India s victory in the Twenty20 tournament the same year, cricket fans had come to rebuild the wall.

LTTE supports getting nailed in Colombo.

Rs.2.4 million worth drugs seized

The Terrorist Investigating Department (TID) arrested an owner of a pharmacy believed to be a supporter of the LTTE in Wellawatte this morning, Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera told www.news.lk.

The suspect, Selvanyagm Balachandran is the owner of Neelam Pharmacy at Perera Lane , Wellawatta.

The TID seized 32 varieties of medical items worth Rs.2.4 million which were to be handed over to the LTTE, he further said.

Further investigations are in place and the suspect is believed to be a strong supporter of the LTTE medical division, sources added. (DK)

I guess Velu's Diary may bring out more people.Who knows?

British & Norwegian diplomats refused visit to Jaffna

Defence authorities have rejected a request by British and Norwegian diplomats in Colombo, Sri Lanka to allow them visit the Jaffna peninsula, 'Divaina' reports. It has been revealed that the reason behind this request was to visit IDP camps in Jaffna, the newspaper says. It adds that government has learnt that Norwegian media has recently accused the Sri Lankan government of not providing adequate facilities for the displaced persons.
