Winning the Peace

Sunday, 17 May 2009 - 11:24 PM SL Time

First I would like to offer my prayers for the thousands of lives that have been lost of our people of all communities in this horrendous war. May they find peace and happiness in their new incarnations.

The Sri Lankan State forces under the determined leadership of Mahinda Rajapakse has done what many including myself thought was not possible - the military defeat of the LTTE. However as we saw in Iraq when George W. Bush declared `mission accomplished` winning the war on the battlefield is a different kettle of fish than winning the peace.

Winning the peace means not only holding the territory but most importantly being able to address the grievances of the Tamil people that lead to the creation and growth of the LTTE in the first place.

This is the most critical period now. How will the Mahinda regime treat the defeated, harassed and bloodied people of the North and East? Is the Eastern province the model to be imposed upon the North? That is, will a favored proxy of the govt like Devananda`s EPDP be given the task of holding the people in check like Karuna`s TMVP is doing in the East with thuggery and impunity?

Or will there be an attempt to bring about real devolution of power so that the people of the area can run their own affairs in their own language with minimal interference from the center?

How the govt responds to its victory will determine to a great extent the future course of the Tamil people`s struggle for their rights. If the govt acts arrogantly this will only be the end of the begining and a new phase of guerrilla war is likely to emerge in the not too distant future.

However it is to be hoped that the just struggle for the basic rights and dignity of the Tamil people will take a form that is non-violent and that will usher in the benefits that are due to them. The just struggle of the Tamil people was overshadowed by the brutality of the organization that came to lead them. The LTTE became simply a mirror of the brutality of the State. The way to peace is never through war. That is a lesson that the govt needs to understand as well. The just grievances of the Tamil people could have been addressed far earlier with the sympathy of the vast majority of non-racist Sinhala people as well as with the sympathy of the world if the LTTE did not attempt to suicide-bomb its way to liberation.

That being said the courage and pride of the warriors of the Tamil people should never be forgotten. It should be a lesson to all people what happens when you try to dominate other human beings and deprive them of their dignity.

If it does, the guerrilas can depend on the full 'support' of the so-called revolutionaries from the modaya community.

Devolution of power to useless Tamil/Sinhalese will not solve any problem.

Giving power to capable Tamil/Sinhalese will solve most problems.

AnuD,

I have no applause for the president who is a mass murderer. Just as Prabhakaran is a mass murderer. Thousands of human beings are suffering and many dying as we sit comfortably away from the horror-zone. There is nothing to applaud there. But that Mahinda has been been successful in rallying the international community - states in the west and those in the east - behind him, and building up his forces, and ruthlessly, Prabhakran style, eliminating dissenters to his rule and forging a victory in the conventional phase of the war is simply a fact.

THe plight of hundreds of thousands still behind barbed wire in camps, suffering without medicine, food, suffering from harassment by paramilitary and military forces this is the ongoing human tragedy that the government will have to account for. The fate of thousands still trapped within the last patch of land that the army is in the middle of invading now will also determine the fate of this regime.

The LTTE with its own brand of communalist corrupt cynical politics was never the answer to the problems facing the Tamils of Sri Lanka. However the problems which gave birth to the LTTE have not been solved they have simply worsened and there is no solution in sight. A lot will depend on how Mahinda can swtich from warmaker to peacemaker but even more depends on how the Tamil people will evaluate what has happened to them and how they decide to respond in the future. What is certain is that foolish and arrogant actions by the State will only assure that the conventional war gives way to a guerilla war that will keep the island shedding blood for decades to come. The long-term impact of all this murder on the psyche of the people is another matter we will have to contend with. What will be the impact on the minds and hearts of the new generations by the militarized and intolerant ethos that has permeated all parts of the island. Rising crime, rising rapes, murders, gangsterism, the economy in a shambles. What will become of all the thouands of decommissioned soldiers? How will Mahinda provide jobs for them? Has the country already descended into a collective hell from which it will not be able to extricate itself? With all the flag-waving and breastbeating hoopla orchestrated by the State we stay focused like a cow on the straw that is before us and pay not attention to the butchers block not so far away. I hope that we can ascend out of this collective hell and become human again and help each other and work together for our common good as brothers and sisters. But sometimes when something is broken it just cannot be put back together again.
