| | Permanent building ? Saturday, 2 May 2009 - 7:24 AM SL Time | | | Permanent building ?
This is just one example site from the UN satellite image interpretation. It says a permanent building destroyed at this place within last month.
See the tree images here.
Google image:
May be taken about 1 year or so before the conflict in this area. No permanent building in the spot (see the yellow and red circles).
March 29 image:
There are buildings, but it`s not easy to say that they are permanent. They may newly build for resettlement of IDPs and perhaps some activities of LTTE too.
Apri 19
Nearly all those temporary buildings have gone. The big white one may be due to SLA attack, or may not. The foundation like mark is remaining.
Conclusion:
This is not a permanent building of this spot, but may be a semi-permanent one, build very recently. Form UN side, using high resolution data is the best way to assess, when no access is possible to field. But, they have to check more data, before come into conclusion. I agree, some spots like craters made by bombs must be correct.
Also,
University of Peradeniya already questions the accuracy of this UN interpretation, which has done mainly based on satellite images, without extensive ehough investigations.

This is not about the go into the NFZ, this is about the methodology of the image interpretation. If UN can go into the area, they dont need to check satellite images.
When, LTTE controlled some big area, they never let people to enter, without having a direct benefit for them. Now, GOSL is conducting a war there with LTTE and people may not have free access to the war-zone. |

A closer look from the IC is not a bad idea to maintain the quality of our matters. But the problem is the credibility. When its satellite data, and coming through UN, people want to trust them, without asking much questions.
In fact, though I wrote here UN, they only used data. Original data came from a private satellite data company. |

USA maintained Guantanamo bay for over decade. What did UN do about it.
What action UN took when Israel use phosperous attacks on civilians.
It is easy to become arm chair analysts.
SL is running a war againts LTTE for last 3 decades.
It is a war going on out there and UN splitting the hair over matters. Important thing is eliminate LTTE and plan for reconstruction work. |

As a small developing country, our capability is limited to go against IC but, SL did a good job, compare to the place our country has in international arena. Yet, its important to coop wit IC, whenever its possible.
Obviously, UN may have some soft spaces for the US handling of Iraq, and matter in Gaza. Since some leading countries have own problems with land (Japan - Sahalin, India - Nagland, China - Tibet, etc), Sri Lanka is having a considerable support in this war against LTTE. |
