The Hon Bob Debus, MP
Home Minister

Dear Mr. Debus,
Your Lack of Refugee Wisdom
I refer to your expressions regarding the refugee boat tragedy that happened yesterday.
My first reaction was to check whether they were
Sri Lankans. I felt relieved in learning that they were not Sri Lankans but were from Afghanistan. During your interview with ABC`s 7.30 Report, you said that this was a major issue with more and more refugees coming from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and
Pakistan. It is interesting that you mentioned Sri Lanka first. I felt that in some way I placed my Truth in you with or without you being conscious of it.
You were the Attorney General of NSW when I was arrested by the NSW Police for Peaceful assembly in a Public area of the University of NSW. The Police listed me as Sri Lankan despite my strong protests that I was `
Australian` seeking to be protected and punished by fellow Australians. I am not Australian just for legal purposes. I am real Australian because I feel for fellow Australians of all colors and origins. The test is when you connect to the need of someone without having to `know`. When that someone fits your own perception of being Australian then we both are Australian in substance. Until then you really are living in your country of origin, including in England and Aboriginal land and not in Australia as it is felt by those currently living and sharing within the laws of Australia. By abusing the Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901, your government abused its status as `Australian`. Everyone who truly believes s/he is an Australian is an Australian. To believe, you must not think. One must have a still mind to feel and therefore believe. Ultimately it is we who certify who we are. That is our natural right to endorse that to ourselves and to express it without deriving benefits and/or causing costs. When NSW Police endorsed me as Sri Lankan they did so for legal and administrative purposes which means they had the responsibility to calculate consciously, and we were incurring costs for them to do their work. They derived status benefits for themselves by calling themselves `Australians` the same way Sinhalese call themselves Sri Lankans and dictate to Tamils anyway they can, unless they think that it is beneficial for them to `show` respect for Tamils as equal Sri Lankans. Tamils currently in detention around and in Vanni and those who are still trapped in the war zone are a good sample of Sri Lanka`s Aborigines they do not know of any Land other than the one called Eelam. They are being punished for believing that that is their `homeland`.
Racial Discrimination `happens` when majority rule is in the custody of majority race who do not consciously think and use the merit basis at all times. To the extent the armed forces failed to consciously override their natural inclinations, their actions in punishing Tamils are racially discriminatory. There is a need to require them to show `merit` basis when a complaint of racial discrimination is received.
Likewise here in Australia, with refugees for whom you do not have `feelings`. As Attorney General of NSW, you had the real opportunity to develop wisdom in serving refugees. Given that Australia is using the war opportunities in Afghanistan, it was the duty to `serve` and not administer refugees from that country. If you seek to administer and `tell` refugees what their rights and benefits are you have the responsibility to immediately withdraw our troops from their God-given country. Then if they seek refuge you have the right to tell them because they would owe you. Now we owe them. Peace is the point at which we do not owe outsiders those with whom we do not feel naturally connected.
If you had included migrants as your own not just through the law but through every opportunity available to you you would not be an expert with refugees and not shun them as if they were parasites.
I urge you to use global standards in serving refugees, so we Australians would carry ourselves with dignity at the international level.
Yours sincerely
Gaja Lakshmi Paramasivam
