Sri Lanka has named Kumar Sangakkara as captain for the World Twenty20 tournament in England later this year, while Muttiah Muralidaran has been appointed his deputy in the provisional 25-member squad announced by the national selection committee.

The 31-year-old Sangakkara, vice-captain for three years, has played 80 Tests and 246 one-day internationals. He succeeds Mahela Jayawardena, who stepped down as captain at the end of the two-Test series in Pakistan which was abandoned last week.

Sri Lanka do not have any international fixtures until the World Twenty20 tournament which begins on June 5.

Its first match is against Australia on June 8 at Trent Bridge.

Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Muttiah Muralitharan (vice-capt), Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene, Chamara Kapugedera, Jehan Mubarak, Chamara Silva, Angelo Mathews, Farveez Maharoof, Nuwan Kulasekera, Thilan Thushara, Lasith Malinga, Chaminda Vaas, Ajantha Mendis, Kaushalya Weeraratne, Upul Tharanga, Isuru Udana, Dilhara Lokuhettige, Chintaka Jayasinghe, Nuwan Zoysa, Gihan Rupasinghe, Thilina Kandamby, Malinga Bandara, Dilhara Fernando.

Indika De Saram is not included however the surprise inclusion is Nuwan Zoysa, considering the English conditions plus his big hitting, can probably favour a place in the tour party.

Muttiah Muralidaran has been appointed his deputy

This is obviously more GoSL punakku. As so many donkeys have been whining, they will never make Murali captain or even VC because he is a Tamil. I don't believe this article.

Ramz,

The tournament will be held in June, so enough time left to recover, let us hope the best combination makes the tour.
