None Other Than Mahinda Rajapakse

Friday, 13 March 2009 - 10:28 AM SL Time

By Uvindu Kurukulasuriya

Lasantha Wickrematunge faced his last moments at an unusual time at an unusual place. From the moment he left home the day he was murdered, he was aware that he was being tailed. He informed his friends of this fact on the phone.

One friend had advised him to immediately go to a safe place. Lasantha`s reply was that `...at most, I will be killed.` He had realised that if he had gone to a safe place, it would only be postponing his death for a few more days.

He was an unarmed man driving his own car. There is no safety for the civil population of this country. If someone decides that another should be liquidated, it is a dead cert that it will happen any time.

The moment I heard Lasantha was shot, I went to the Kalubowila Hospital accompanied by a person whose name appears at the top of the hit list: Dr. Saravanamuttu. On my way, I was reminded of the trip I took to the same hospital on a similar occasion when I heard that another Editor, Rohana Kumara, was shot. That day, I was accompanied by the Ravaya Editor, Victor Ivan, who also topped the hit list at that point of time.

Media suppression
===========
Rohana Kumara was shot dead during the tail end of the first presidential period of Chandrika, on September 7, 1999. That was the time when her regime carried out the most brutal activities against the media of the country and against democracy.

A minister who was sidelined in her cabinet wanted to show he was shocked, and in secret, to do something for the freedom and safety of journalists. I had discussions with him and paved the way for him to make it up with Victor Ivan, the Convener of the Free Media Movement, whom he did not like much.

This minister was induced to publicly take the lead in establishing a broad front to re-establish democracy in the country.

One evening during that period, that minister, together with Hemasiri Fernando, who had held the position of Secretary to Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Victor Ivan, and myself were at Hemasiri`s house, when I received a telephone call: `A journalist has been shot at Delkanda.`

Then and now
=========
Hemasiri gave several telephone calls and identified the journalist as Rohana Kumara. `This is a job of Chandrika and Sanath,` the minister said. This minister, who had been sidelined by Chandrika, and who had promised to come forward to safeguard democracy and media freedom, was none other than the present President, Mahinda Rajapakse.

The accusation he levelled against Chandrika that day has boomeranged on him. For the first time, following Lasantha`s assassination, slogans have appeared accusing him of murder: `Ghathakaya Satakaya.`

During the period of this President`s regime, 17 journalists and media workers have been killed. Two years ago, when the Free Media Movement officially met the President, we requested him to bring before the law, symbolically, the murderer of at least one journalist. At a personal meeting a few months ago, I reminded him of that request. So far nothing has happened.

`Terrorist journalist`
===========
President Rajapakse called Lasantha a `terrorist journalist` during an interview with Reporters Without Borders last October. (See http://www.rsf.org/article.php3 ?id_article=29916)

He said the same thing to us last September, when we were at a meeting with him. President of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists` Association, Sanath Balasuriya, and its Secretary, Poddala Jayantha, accompanied me as the Convenor of the Free Media Movement to this meeting with President Rajapakse.

Mahinda Rajapakse called Lasantha `Kotiyek` (a Tiger) during that meeting. He made the same remark about MTV Head, Raja Mahendran as well. After the meeting the President asked us to join him for dinner, but we politely declined the invitation. (See http://www.thesundayleader.lk/20080921/POTSHOT.HTM)

The same night I phoned both Lasantha and Raja Mahendran and told them what the President had told us. (See http://www.freemed iasrilanka.org/English/news.php?id =1113§ion=news).

After Lasantha, was killed this same President is saying that Lasantha Wickrematunge was a very good friend of his! That Lasantha and he had dinner together! And a lot of other stories.

Last supper
=======
This is like the legend about the dinner invitation to those marked out for assassination by the Mafia. I don`t know whether Lasantha had dinner with the Mafia or with Mahinda Rajapakse. But I know one thing: he never went to the breakfast meetings with the President like all the other editors. It seems that if a Sri Lankan journalist is to survive, he or she should never miss breakfast with the President.

Individual terrorism will result only in short-term advantages. In the short term, a government can control the media. However, it cannot be done over the long term. What was the fate of President Premadasa with the murder of Richard de Soyza?

No doubt the bouquets he received for suppressing the JVP during that period and for other factors would have encouraged him to take that suppressive approach. Weren`t members of the smaller political parties who were frightened and became apprehensive by the smallest of actions, be ever so grateful to Premadasa for saving their lives? Didn`t they join the UNP in hordes?

Yet, all these advantageous factors turned to be a mirage with the murder of Richard de Soyza. His worst enemy turned out to be the political victories, such as the suppression of the JVP, that generated in him an overweening confidence. Will the Rajapakse government forget this political lesson?

Lanka-e-News, December 23, 2008, 9.20 AM) Media organizations and NGOs are panicked after leading media and NGO figure Sunanda Deshapriya had to leave the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA) after paying back the money he was charged of defrauding.

We go beyond the media policy of being tight lipped when a media organization chief was caught in a fraud and begin a discussion regarding the incidents preceding and following this revelation. We do not target any person. We need to create a dialogue on how the media organizations can be correct.

This is the last incident that exposed the fraud relevant to Sunanda Deshapriya.

CPA was the sponsor of the Public Service and Human Rights Reporting Award Ceremony held in the Galle Face Hotel in 2007. It was organized by the chief of the CPA media section Sunanda Deshapriya.

The fraud has taken place when a CD was produced to distribute during the award ceremony.

A famous studio submitted an invoice of Rs. 90,000 to produce the CD. The name of the payee was a third party. Usually, a studio charges around Rs. 100,000 for 20 days of editing a feature film. CPA began an investigation since the invoice was apparently overvalued and the way the payment was to be made was dubious. The investigation revealed that the relevant studio had not issued such invoice. Later investigations revealed that although payments had been made for 1500 CDs, only 200 copies had been produced. The accounts of distributing around 300 copies were not correctly produced. First, several loyalists of Deshapriya submitted false accounts, they eventually divulged the truth under pressure of the investigation being given to CID.

The relevant payee said before the investigation committee that he handed over the balance of Rs. 192,000 cheque to Sunanda Deshapriya who was also present at the moment. In fear of a CID probe, the witness further revealed an incident of giving money to Sunanda that was obtained for computer training from an institute related to Sunanda's wife and a neighbor

Sunanda thus paid back the money he swindled. The importance is that this is the second time he did so.

Meanwhile, the Free Media Movement (FMM) that Sunanda Deshapriya represents has also begun an internal audit under a three member committee. The time span of the investigation extends to the period Deshapriya was the convener of FMM. When new convener Uvindu Kurukulasuriya assumed duty, there was no at least an accounts clerk.

We are waiting for the report of this probe. But we have doubts on why the audit was not given to a refuted audit firm. Although we have no suspicion about the three media persons who conduct the probe, they lack experience regarding audits.

Deshapriya was a long time convener of the FMM. There are reasonable doubts about his conduct during this period. It is rational that the conduct of the leaders and the henchmen of the Working Journalists' Association are under suspicion since that organization was also under the influence of Sunanda Deshapriya.

Working Journalists' Association and FMM are the most vital organizations of the media persons. We expose these facts to save these organizations from the swindlers and to make them transparent. We urge you to look at where our finger points to and not at our finger.

We expose how Sunanda Deshapriya and the chiefs of the media organizations swindled money from the international fund for the safety of the media persons. There has been corrupt deals like purchasing papaya shampoo from the money of this fund. Releasing money from the international fund for the safety of the media persons has now suspended and an audit is underway.

Get Rid of The Snake

When the enemies of democracy and freedom are at the gates, and all free-thinking individuals should stand together to defend our rights, Uvindu the snake and his pet Sandaruwan have not only thrown open the gates, but also given our enemies a mighty weapon.

The workings of institutions and organizations are not our concern. It is for the boards and committees and whatnot of the CPA and the FMM to decide if there has been any fraud. If individuals are found to have committed fraud then again it is these governing bodies who should decide what action is to be taken. None of that is our concern.

What is our concern is that at a point in time when all of us should rally together and stand as one against the barbaric oppression of the Rajapakse government, Uvindu Kurukulasuriya has singlehandedly hacked away at the trust between those who have fought alongside each other for many many years. In a country where lawlessness reigns, in a time when journalists are hunted and abducted and killed simply because they dream of freedom, Sunanda Deshapriya and the FMM have stepped forward to protect them, and to protect us from a state-machinery that would rather rule sheep than people. They have been able to do this solely because of the support they have had from various organizations, and the coalitions they have formed. Without unity among us this battle cannot be fought, let alone won.

AndyLau, yes corruption is bad especially by those who are supposed to defend media freedom and it should be punished, but coldblooded murder is also bad and the President of the country has yet to answer for his crimes.

The Snake's Handiwork

The attack on MTV this morning shows us how the tyrannical Rajapakse regime has grown bold now that their snake has destroyed the Free Media Movement. This is what Uvindu the Snake paved the way for. He is as responsible for this as the tyrants. Uvindu is dangerous. To keep him in the fold any longer would prove to be nothing short of fatal for the freedom of expression in Sri Lanka.

The snake has also released a fake document to his pet rat Sandaruwan at Lankaenews which claims to be a list of all the money stolen by Sunanda. This document is pure fiction and drafted by the snake himself. Even the treasurer of the FMM does not know how the Uvindu the Snake came up with this data.

This document shows us what the snake is really after. He does not want good governance for the FMM. He does not want justice. He just wants to destroy Sunanda and burn the FMM to the ground.

This alone is sufficient grounds for kicking this snake out of the FMM. We have to do it now before Uvindu and his tyrant masters can burn all of us to the ground. For the sake of media freedom in the country cast him out.

We call on the Executive Committee of the FMM to cast out this snake. NOW!

The 'credibility' problem with Uvindu....

But where was Uvindu Kurukulasuriya, the Convener of the Free Media Movement in all of this? At a time when the FMM has the greatest role to play in leading the fight against the tyrannical Rajapakse regime Uvindu the Snake was missing. He did not stand by us. He did not care. This Nero went out drinking while Sirasa burned.

The Snake showed us his true colors yesterday. He is a puppet of the tyrants. They are his paymasters. We ask you Uvindu, how much did they pay you to bring down the FMM? What is your price?

Will we allow this Snake to betray us all to the Rajapakse regime? Will we allow him to destroy the FMM? Will we pass silently into the darkness?

Cast out Uvindu Kurukulasuriya. Cast out the Snake.
