Presidential polls, risks and pitfalls

But, will those methods work with Fonseka, who has dared to ruffle an incumbent Executive President's feathers, if he becomes President? In such an eventuality, he will be the Commander-in-Chief not just the army chief or the Chief of Defence Staff he may look for an alternative to hostile political forces blocking his path. Remember his first message after retirement was to the army. Old habits, they say, die hard!

Sri Lanka's democracy needs to be strengthened, no doubt. And the Opposition has a right to make or break governments democratically. But, such projects must be undertaken with utmost care without leaving room for disaster. Else, there is a possibility of its remedy ending up worse than the malady.

In trying to bring about democratic change, the beaten track is the safest, however alluring other paths may look.

The news item appearing in today s Island that the JVP had agreed to handover the premiership of a caretaker government to Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe is a blatant lie says JVP Parliamentarian Anura Dissanayake.

Speaking at a press conference held at party head office at Pelawatta today (24th) Mr. Dissanayake said his party had no dealings with the United National Front and there was no need to have any discussions with them.

MR will have a tough time ahead if he doesn't listen to the core demography of SLFP, the educated middle class.

Free,

You are missing the strategic point here. If SF rejects those parties, what is the alternative he has to challenge the current regime democratically?

And Y shd SF wants to challenge the current regime?? Cos does he thinks that UNP is not corrupted and a clean party? If so Y did the people finally voted CBK after 17 years of UNP rule??? We cannot forget the corrupted regime during the UNP rule? aren' t we?

I had a very high regard for both DBS Jyaraj and AsianTribune. But now DBS is very bias and Asiantribune is worse than Tamil net. I will read Tamilnet rather.

I said all info they write might not be correct, but atleast 50% true! It is no secret that GEN SF is not a popular figure in the army! After all how SF was rewared is written in plain english in the Sunday Times Political column! SF is still to reject those info!

and going to run the country like an experiment with a RESEARCH MIND??

Of course, pondering the next move in what they shd do is research! You cannot predict what the normal voters will do, and having said that I agree MR has lost his popularity than he became PE in the last PEs. Still he might clear the hurdle as voter do compare the politicians ability face dire situation when the country was on FIRE!

What is your profession? Is that how you behave at home or want to control others with your 'xxx zzz' mind??

:)))))

Yes! I just don't take decisions just b'cos someone has a good military background!

I rate anyone with military experience is the best candidate to run any organization.

I just cannot understand Y the Pakistani people rejected Musraff then??? Mynamar, Pinochet etc.. They were military rulers. Guess we shd go through their history of planning and ruling the country!

SF's fate seems worst than Arjuna Ranathungas.
He doesn't deserve to be insulted like this but its sad he choose this path.

guys i talked to very hardcore UNP'rs in colmbo few days ago. they dont like the JVP /SF agreement. But with SF/Ranil they are ok. everyone is at BAY how UNF gonna do the campaigning without JVP. JVP also lost their grass level machinery than ever. imagine the results in PC's . SF and the parties got a very Uphill task.

First, you two need to grow up ! It is very sad to see that Sri lankans are not matured enough for their age. That is another reason country is having so much issues.
