Why does Mahinda Rajapakse wants to go for a presidential election?

This is my version of analysis.
MR don't have confidnece that his UPFA ministers can win if he goes for GE 1st. Some of them may even loose outright.
If he looses GE or win by a simple majority it would give a negative impact for his PE. If PE held in 2 years time when war wins fades it would be even more difficult.
If he goes for PE now he has a good chance to win since all UPFA ministers canvass for MR not for themselves. I think JVP cannot do much after firebrand WImal had defected. So only Tamil & Muslim votes he have to worry. If he win PE which he have a good chance for GE and then it should be a cake walk. He can even try 2/3rd majority in GE.
The risk is if he looses he would loose everything. PE & GE. This is a very unlikely scenario.
If MR's calculeted gamble works he will get the whole Sri Lankan pie.

Roshan, you are not that far off the mark of many people's interpretation of the current state of affairs.
In a GE, he will be pummeled because of people like the Doctor and how the Southern PC elections were held. |
