On the basis of the vote on account presented to Parliament this year , a colossal Rs. 1400 million had been allocated for the President s office expenditure . This means that he requires a sum of Rs. 19 million per day for his own office expenditure.
While allocations to Ministries are drastically cut and Govt. says it has no money to bring down the cost of living , tariffs and taxation burdens heaped on the people , the President who speaks loud , perhaps too loud about his concern for the people has found it fit to take the lion s share without any compunction.
Even when the workers demand higher wages , the Govt. has no solution , but the President has a solution for his own unwarranted expenditure .
These facts were highlighted by the UNP at several meetings , and now the JVP too has endorsed the views of he UNP

Now, commission on empty mortar shells
Kilo of brass to go for Rs. 150, half the market price
The Defence Ministry had planned to sell 41,000 tonnes of spent mortar shells as scrap brass to Singapore for Rs. 150 a kilo despite the normal market price being as high as Rs. 350 a kilo, Parliament was told yesterday.

This is a government who have mixed up their priorities!
GOV is focusing on mega projects (buildings, bridges,
roads ect ect) but they don't seems to realize that
people are struggling to live everyday & are loosing confidence with the GOV...
Mahinda, we voted for you & we want you to remain as the
president for next 30 years as there is no one else we can
see who can take that up. But you should realize that time
is quickly running out...
We don't want SL to become another Japan, England or US...
We want our simple way of life without having to too worry about TAXs, Bills, House-rentals & enormous amount of transport cost (buses/trains) like in the west, where people can see things but can't really enjoy the luxury
as hardly anyone can afford...
This is not want we want please!!
Anil.

WASHINGTON (AFP) The US House of Representatives urged Sri Lanka's government Wednesday to guarantee the safety and quick release of some 300,000 Tamils and other war-displaced people currently held in camps.
By an overwhelming 421-1 vote, lawmakers approved a non-binding resolution that calls on the authorities in Colombo to help the populations of widely condemned, tightly guarded camps return to their homes.
The measure urges Sri Lanka's government to turn over the operation of the camps to civilians, and allow day-to-day access to the camps for the Red Cross, non-governmental groups, and others who care for internally displaced people.
It also calls on the government to allow an independent assessment of charges of large numbers of deaths, rampant disease, poor sanitation and poor health care in the camps and a plan to remedy the issues.
The proposal also asks the government to establish 'reasonable conditions' to allow non-Sri-Lanka agencies access to the inhabitants and to ensure reconstruction of areas devastated by the country's internal strife.
And it urges the Tamil people 'to continue to be patient while the government reestablishes normalcy' and calls on the government to make headway on political reforms to address the Tamils' 'political concerns.'

Faced with an impending security force operation, a top leader of the Maoists on Thursday said the ultras were ready for talks with the
Centre provided some of their conditions were met, including withdrawal of paramilitary forces deployed in naxal-hit states.
Detailing the conditions, top Maoist leader Kishenji told PTI over phone that the Centre would have to first withdraw para-military forces deployed in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal and secondly the problems of tribals would have to be treated in a sympathetic way.
'Also both the Centre and the state governments will have to apologise to the tribals for the prolonged torture meted out to them and the consequent suffering from the time of Independence,' Kishenji said.
Asked what should be the nature of the apology, Kishenji said without elaborating, 'They will have to come to the tribals and apologise.'

| Oh. My Gosh! That amount, if correct, is excessive by any standards. |
