The possibility of adopting ancient methods and rituals of Wanniya-laeto (veddahs) is being considered to remove the hives of hornets and wasps at Sigirya.
On numerous occasions, visitors both domestic and foreign, climbing the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress had come under wasp attacks resulting in many being admitted to hospital.
With many suggesting various methods at removing the nests, a party led by the leader of the veddhas, Uruvarige Wannielatto visited Sigiriya and declared that with their ancient ways and methods, the wasp nests could be removed.
He had said that those nests could be removed with their own methods and rituals in the months of March and April.

Before the war started, in 2006, i think our secirity forces get lessons from the Veddah community about their hunting skills in the forest. It may have given big dividends to our forces and Veddah elders are really should be proud of it.
Amidst global climate change it is high time to adapt the ancient skills and knowledge. |
