In defence of Ponseka

Tuesday, 3 November 2009 - 6:44 AM SL Time

He is a career soldier. He was injured critically in a suicide bomb attack.
Then he devised a plan that worked against LTTE. His strategy overcame an enemy that others had not been able to defeat for 30 years. Until the fall of Killinochchi there weren`t any reports of widespread civilian deaths.
Who ordered the hospitals to be bombed? Who ordered the civilian massacres? Who ordered the killing of surrendered combatants? And who ordered the internment of the civilians in Nazi camps?
Ponseka was in China during the last days of the conflict. He had no hand in the Kashyappa style closing of the bunkers with people in them. He did not order the bulldozing of the injured. He did not lure the Tiger leadership into surrendering, with false promises of safe passage.
He did not order the killing of Balachandran, the innocent child of VP.
So why should he try to defend a regime that has been ungrateful and unkind to him? Why should he sacrifice a peaceful life with his daughters in Oklahoma to defend a criminal regime that has killed all it`s political opponents in cold blood. Can he return to Sri Lanka safely? Can he trust the promises of the brothers?
What will you do if you are in Ponseka`s boots?

As the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) pointed out last week: Under the laws of war, parties to a conflict must take all feasible precautions to ensure that a target of attack is a military objective and not a civilian object. Attacks that do not discriminate between military targets and civilian objects are prohibited. Individuals who order or carry out unlawful attacks wilfully that is, deliberately or recklessly are responsible for war crimes.
The associated HRW report catalogued 30 separate attacks on known hospitals since December as evidence of war crimes. The government cannot hide behind LTTE atrocities to justify their own unlawful acts, HRW Asia director Brad Adams said.

Where are the guys who said war crimes investigation will never happen?
When crooks fall out, they tell on each other. Ponny is the lesser evil as far as the Tamils are concerned. So we need to support and nurse him through these bad times:))
