With the threat of aerial attacks over with the end of the war, Adventure-Asia, the only commercial balloon operator in
Sri Lanka is looking forward to an optimistic season of hot air balloon rides starting November 7.
Adventure-Asia Director Peter Stewart explained that the company started their air-safari rides in 2003, but within five years, the business deteriorated with the escalation of the war and many were afraid to take to the skies in a hot air balloon.
Our worst year was 2008 where after a couple of rides we had to ground the balloon because people were afraid of air borne attacks, he explained, But with the end of the war we have seen a dramatic turn around and we already have plenty of bookings for flights this season.
The ride in the sixteen seater commercial balloon over the spectacular regions of Kandalama and Dambulla begin just after dawn and last for two-three hours. Stewart employs internationally experienced pilots to guide the balloon on a nature and culture filled ride over the Sigirya summit, the Dambulla caves and the grass lands of the dry zone.
He explained that the Kandalama-Dambulla region is considered one of the top five destinations to fly a balloon in the world.
Stewart is now confident that the country has turned around and adventure tourism will be here to stay.
The rides are priced at around USD 230 for a foreign national and Rs. 17000 for a local. The season which begins in November goes on till end April, and Stewart informed that a ride is booked once there are a minimum of eight passengers confirmed.
Stewart explained that November is ideal because of the better wind and weather conditions. It is also the beginning of the winter season for tourists.
