(Lanka-e-News, Oct.27, 2009, 8.10 PM) The Secretary of the GMOA , Dr. Chandana Atappattu told Lanka e news that they have sent a letter to the President today requesting a special Presidential Commission to inquire into the import and distribution of drugs by the Health Ministry. to avert. the possible loss of public confidence in the Health sector owing to use and import of inferior quality drugs.

Dr. Atapattu stated two children died due to rubella vaccines glass pieces were detected in the injectin vials in recent days. This is the result of import of sub standard drugs. There are also five type of drugs distributed among the Hospitals which have been now decided as dangerous and ought to be discarded.

The GMOA`s objective is to find proper solutions without politicizing the issue, so that the public confidence in the public sector will not be eroded. Those responsible must conduct a proper investigation and ensure that, at least in the future, there shall no be such life risking lapses.

The Association has sent an official letter to the President in this regard, the Secretary noted. The Govt. decided yesterday, to withdraw five drugs in use in Hospitals.

The cost of these drugs which have been discarded are billions.of rupees. Health Ministry, Director supplies Dr. Sarath Bandara said, steps are being taken to recover the monies from the Companies which supplied the inferior drugs.

Samath Rathnapriya, President of the Health services union said, though the inferior drugs are asaid to be withdrawn, there are still doubts. Therefore the patients have been told to be careful and exercise caution when drugs are administered, by noting the drug expiry date etc. Moreover, if they have the slightest suspicion, to refrain from taking the drug.

These drugs are imported by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation and they are distributed after the examination by the Director, drug standard control. Hence, it is necessary that an inquiry should be held to ensure whether these State body and officials have duly discharged their duties duly.

This is an ongoing tussle between medics and DOH. DOH took the correct decision to make it cimpulsory to prescribe generically BUT let the whole process down by NOT regulating which generics were to be circulated in SL.

What SL needs is a FDA in US or a MHRA like in the UK, which carries all the power.

Most of the generics in sri lanka are cheap imports from india. Drug manufacturing is a home industry in india. I wouldn't give any of those drugs to my family. Would you?

So if people know that the drugs do not meet the standard why pay billions of rupees and import them to later destroy.

Is any one accountable? The public that use these facilities get it for free so they don't have much of a say but the govt that pays for these drugs should know what it is paying for.

I send a note with my child saying 'NO' when they came to his school after the first death at Mature.

My 'Gode' Theory vs. 'Moda Sripala' theory.

Moda Sira says Two deaths of Healthy Innocent children from about 2million children is acceptable after his earnings from million $ commission from Indian sub standard Drugs.

My Moda Question.

What is the probability of all these school children who were forced to get this vaccine will get marry?

What is the probability that Those who get married will have children?

Therefore why not get this vaccine at the time of marriage of or even after ( as per present trend now no deviyo dunna lamai) that couple think about having a child ?

If you live in Sri Lanka, you don't have much choice, especially if you can't afford private treatment.

Moda Sira comes with the Rajapakse 'package'. The majority of Moda Sinhalayas will vote for them.
