(Lanka-e-News, Oct.27, 2009, 8.10 PM) The Secretary of the GMOA , Dr. Chandana Atappattu told Lanka e news that they have sent a letter to the President today requesting a special Presidential Commission to inquire into the import and distribution of drugs by the Health Ministry. to avert. the possible loss of public confidence in the Health sector owing to use and import of inferior quality drugs.
Dr. Atapattu stated two children died due to rubella vaccines glass pieces were detected in the injectin vials in recent days. This is the result of import of sub standard drugs. There are also five type of drugs distributed among the Hospitals which have been now decided as dangerous and ought to be discarded.
The GMOA`s objective is to find proper solutions without politicizing the issue, so that the public confidence in the public sector will not be eroded. Those responsible must conduct a proper investigation and ensure that, at least in the future, there shall no be such life risking lapses.
The Association has sent an official letter to the President in this regard, the Secretary noted. The Govt. decided yesterday, to withdraw five drugs in use in Hospitals.
The cost of these drugs which have been discarded are billions.of rupees. Health Ministry, Director supplies Dr. Sarath Bandara said, steps are being taken to recover the monies from the Companies which supplied the inferior drugs.
Samath Rathnapriya, President of the Health services union said, though the inferior drugs are asaid to be withdrawn, there are still doubts. Therefore the patients have been told to be careful and exercise caution when drugs are administered, by noting the drug expiry date etc. Moreover, if they have the slightest suspicion, to refrain from taking the drug.
These drugs are imported by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation and they are distributed after the examination by the Director, drug standard control. Hence, it is necessary that an inquiry should be held to ensure whether these State body and officials have duly discharged their duties duly.
